Old World charm prevails at Americas oldest indoor mall. The Arcade is in the heart of downtown Providence. Stroll under stained glass skylights and ironwork railings built in the Greek revival period, or enjoy tea and croissants on the first floor at one of the many eateries and delis from cafes and grilles to Asian fare. On the second floor are Gladdings Department Store and a hair salon. The Arcade hosts a shoe repair shop, a game and community center, and Center City Art, which features local artists and exhibits.

The Anti-Shopping Mall Shopping Mall
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/04/05
Completed in 1829, the Arcade is known as America's first idoor shopping mall. It is a long Greek Revival building with frontage on two parallel streets. Strong ionic columns greet you at the sidewalk, as does a covered, external walkway leading to all three floors. Entering on any floor, one finds an open, skylighted room with a tasteful mix of shops and restaurants. Don't miss the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society's museum on the third floor. The Arcade is a good place to mingle with executives, bicycle messengers, townies, and tourists while grabbing lunch or a new pair of shoes!
