You cannot find a better example of The Gilded Age than the Marble House on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. It was built as a summer cottage between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. This stone palace set the tone for social and architectural change in the former wooden house summer colony of Newport. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, Marble House was an inspiration from the Trianon at Versailles. The cost of the house at that time was said to be $11 million.
Marble House is the ultimate definition of opulence. Each room seems more splendid than the last. Overall, I found this to be more spectacular than any palace in Europe - - after all, it is much newer and has been painstakingly restored by the Newport Preservation Society. Of the 7 mansions we toured in Newport, this was definitely my favorite.
Best of all, this Newport Mansion offers an audio tour that is totally entertaining. In nearly every room you are offered the option to expand your experience by listening to additional information about the building, the family or the customs of the Gilded Age. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes here to take in all the splendor.
I loved the architecture of the mansion, it was detailed with rich golds, and there was marble everywhere. Its a great mansion to see. It's nice to visit anytime of the year, but if you go in the summer it's the most crowded time of the year. Visit the mansion with someone you care for. It's a family activity
