Scales and Shells
If it is fresh seafood you are craving this is the place in Newport for you. Have an order of steamers at the fully stocked bar while you wait for your table and peruse the enormous chalkboard menu. Scales and Shells prides itself on serving the freshest fish. The wait staff is honest about what is fresh on the menu and will happily honor your request to grill, sear, steam or stuff the fish of your choice. Even the locals proudly wear the restaurant T-shirts, which are for sale at the bar. Reservations are not accepted.
Some of these glowing reviews must have been written by employees. I've been there twice, not overly impressed either time. Very basic in all respects. Had a swordfish special last night, very fresh and nicely cooked, but an awful cut to begin with. Erratic thickness (hard to cook) and lots of dark meat. Service was fine, but you can do better in Newport.
Laborday weekend, was told there was a 2 hour wait downstairs. Oh yeah, best of luck getting a drink. Small bar, 1 bartender who also has to work the raw bar. Cash only. If you are in a rush, sister restaurant upstairs, faster service. Very loud inside however.
Scales and Shells is our favorite in Newport. I love the fresh seafood and especially the grilled lobster.
It is busy and noisy, but the service and food is worth it.
We always look forward to our dinner there.
The salad was weak, the room was cold, and the monk fish and mahi-mahi specials were TOUGH and flavor-less. One of the all-time worst seafood dinners I have ever had.
There are more than enough other places to go for better seafood in Newport...starting with across the street.
My very favorite seafood restaurante! When I go home to Newport to visit, my trip is never complete without dinner at Scales & Shells. The Scicillian Little Necks and Mesquite Grilled Lobster are my favorites! Andy and Debra, you rock!
The food was average. We had wine, house salad and grilled sword fish. Wine was good, house salad had too much vinegar in it. Grilled fish smelled of smoke too much.
The menu is written on the board and you have to strain your eyes to read it.
It's an OK place but nothing special at all.
There is nothing that could have made my dinners here better...Everytime I am in Newport I make sure I eat at Scales & Shells. The service is excellent, and the food is the freshest and best - Hands down my all time favorite!
