Mütter Museum

Description

In 1849 the College of Physicians of Philadelphia started a collection of unusual medical specimens for the study of pathological forensics. Today, it's become fair to say this might be the best collection of medical oddities on display to the public, including such things as President Grover Cleveland's tumor (removed successfully), an exhibit on conjoined twins, and obsolete medical instruments. There are also plenty of skeletons and things in jars. This is a popular spot for teenagers to go on a date, though the College emphasizes, rightly, that this is a serious collection for scientific research.

I am in the medical field so I found the museum very interesting. Love how the had alot of the medical oddities and many of the old teaching tool used long ago. Its small, 3 rooms but they pack a lot in there! Go enjoy!

Great value! Interesting stuff!
By ,
I visited the museum the day before Halloween, so just observing the "types" of people going in was entertaining. This is the best place to explore if you work in health care or forensics or are just fascinated with anatomy, physiology, or pathology. The musuem had a great "American Medical History 101" (I made that up) section. Then you could see all the specimens and other neat stuff. Would suggest taking any students going into medicine, forensics, or nursing. Great, unique experience.

not worth it
By ,
I went in with high expectations, after reading all the reviews, but ggrhhhh..... not worth it. most of the displays are wax models, and obviously very hard to believe all the stories behind them. I certainly appreciate the atmosphere, its cozy.... nice place to hang out on winters...

not worth the money
By ,
the place has MANY WAX displays, very boring, they have many real skulls to many actually, and all the specimens are in this glass case that the glass is wavy and some of the real stuff they have is too low to the floor. They do not have any ramps for strollers to get in the place and once in to view the downstairs one room they have, you have to carry the stroller up and down hope you have strong arms. They have many fetuses on display but again they are in a jar of course however the glass case they are in makes it even more difficult to see it. I think the price is way to high, and it is very boring! ! !dont waste your time or money. Its a joke!

Waste of Money
By ,
I thought this place would be really cool and interesting. I was wrong. It's a small exhibit and the majority of the stuff was not the real thing but a wax replica. I found the staff to be rude and heard them yell at someone for using thier cell phone. You can't take pictures or use your cell phone and the small gift shop does not really have any good items to replace a good photo of the exhibit. 12.00 is to high to pay maybe 5.00 is more like it.

Creepy stuff
By ,
While there are only a few rooms, the place is crammed full of the interesting, weird, and just downright creepy medical curiosities. It is not for casual browsing. But if you like examining and contemplating, and don't mind that some of this stuff was once part of a living person (or the whole person), then this is for you.

A must for any in medicine
By ,
As a 30+ year medical professional, this place is the most unique I've ever experienced. I've been back a second time because there is so much to absorb. Absolutely incredible and a must for anyone who is in medicine or who loves the bizarre.

A unique and enlightening experience

I loved the Mutter Museum. At first, its awkwardness and disturbances can throw you off guard (and it's not for the faint of heart!) but for those that can tolerate it, it is extremely fascinating and educational. It makes you open your eyes to some things out of this bubble we call normalcy.

Can I get a refund!
By ,
Do not get any high expectations going to the museum. The website and the reviews did there job to get me to go but in the end after visiting the museum I felt it was over priced for things that a you could see in a high school fair. The people I spoke with coming out shared my feelings as well. Big disapointment.

A very cool experience
By ,
This was listed on Travel Channel's top 10 wierdest places to visit. While staying in Baltimore, my boyfriend and I took the 2 hour drive up to philadelphia and visited the Mutter Museum. It's $10 admission fee was WELL worth it, if you like the wierd and medically interesting things you might see on the discovery channel or TLC. Things included that stood out in our visit were the realistic models of hands of what your skin would look like with different diseases, a skeleton of a man with "gigantism", tumors in jars of famous presidents, siamese twins, and even real fetuses in jars, showing the size they are at their gestation, and a lot of them with abnormalities. There is also lots of reading on what you are actually looking at, articles, etc., so it's not just a freak show. It's very educational and interesting. Anyway, we thought it was cool, but you have to think that kind of stuff is interesting. I wouldn't take my grandma there, nor would I take my 7 year old. It's more for ages 13 and up, I'd say. So if you're in the area, I'd highly suggest this visit. What else are you going to do in Philly? It seemed like pretty slim pickings, and this museum was a highlight of this town.
