Academy of Natural Sciences
The Academy of Natural Sciences boasts one of the most extensive collections of dinosaur remains and fossils in the country. Visitors can view the 40-foot frame of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, the vanquished rulers of the Earth. In addition to the permanent displays, the academy often puts emphasis on ecological exhibits and their relevance to today's environment. It is conveniently located close to the Franklin Institute and other museums, as well as shopping and eating destinations.
We weren't sure our grandchildren (2 1/2 and 4 1/2 yrs old) would be old enough to enjoy the exhibits. We had nothing to worry about! The oldest liked the dino exhibit and was especially impressed with the dinosaur that greets you as you enter the musuem. Both kids really liked the "outside in area" that allowed them to get close to living creatures and to touch different things like animal furs, shells, etc. They also enjoyed the butterfly house where the butterflies were coming within inches of you as they flew around. The other exhibits were impressive and I would definitely go back with or without the kids.
This is the best musuem I've ever been to in Philadelphia. The Franklin is too crowded with lots of exhibits and parts that don't work. The staff here is really family friendly and easy to get along with.
Our girls especially liked seeing themselves on a big screen with moving dinosaurs around them. They suprised me by wanting to sit and watch the whole quite scientific dinosaur movie. A very nice paleontologist showed us fossils they were uncovering. Staff were extremely friendly. The prices in the toy shop were reasonable. Looks like they have a decent place to eat, but we hiked down to China Town for dim sum.
