The country's largest daily outdoor market, Italian Market purveys fresh produce, meats and dry goods from the nexus of the Italian community in South Philadelphia. Distinctly Italian hams like Sopresseta, Prosciutto, and Capicolla, special olive oils, cheeses and other rare imported foodstuffs are available at the myriad of shops and stands. Giant sandwiches and the infamous "Philly Cheesesteak" are peddled from various eateries. The market's biggest claim to fame came when featured during a scene in the 1976 film "Rocky" where Sylvester Stallone embarks on his famous run, ending up on the steps of the Art Museum, a distance over seven miles.

An Interesting Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/08
The Italian Market is a great place to walk around, get a bite to eat, or shop for cooking utensils. This outdoor market is best known for being the place where Rocky ran through during his training. It is also well known for its cheesesteaks, seafood, and fresh meat. Other than food, many other things to buy can be found at the Italian Market. Such items may include miscellaneous toys, clothes, and, surprisingly, live chickens. The experience was not bad, but I think it could have been better. Of course, this may have been because of the chilly weather. It is better, in my opinion, to go to the Italian Market in the summer. It was nice to get out and walk around, but nothing sparked my interest in terms of buying. I did eventually buy some cheese fries at Pat's Steaks. This is at towards the end of the Italian Market. Overall, this was a pretty good experience for me, and although I have had a better time at the Italian Market previously, I enjoyed myself. It is worth the time, and, if you are willing to buy something, it is worth the money. I recommend it to people who are looking to browse interesting shops, eat good food, or just walk around and look at stuff for sale. You definately do not need to buy anything to have a great time at the Italian Market.

We just got back from Italian Market.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/08
Italian Market in Philadelphia is a great place for those who want to take a break and walk along interesting places. There are stores selling cheeses, chocolates(my favorite!) and many other outdoor stores with fresh fruits. I don't think it worth the money but I do think that it worth the time. I had a great time walking along the market.:)

This is Philly...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/08
As far as the culture of Philly goes, you can't find a better destination. Stop by, take in the sites and sounds (and yes, the smells), grab some fresh coffee and a cheesesteak (and for God's sake, not from Pat's or Geno's...far better cheesesteak mongers do exist at the market). The only trick is getting there. You can drive along Washington Ave. to Ninth St. and there's $2.00 self-parking nearby. Or you can jump the Broad Street Line, get off at Federal Station and walk east along Federal to Ninth. Heck, on a nice day, why don't you just take the walk down from South St...you're probably there anyway.

philadelphia italian market
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/08
The italian market was an excellent place to buy food and items. I think that they had great prices in certain stores on things like hats, food. It could get qa little smelly sometimes because there was often alot of litter. Another reason that it was a little smelly was cause of the fish and raw meat. A great thing about the Italian Market is the atmosphere. All the locals know eachother and if you are not a local than they welcome you right in anyway. I had alot of fun there and if you are looking for a good time than visit the Italian Market in Philadelphia!
