Playhouse Square

Description

The theater lovers and art enthusiasts lovingly named the stretch between East 14th Street and East 17th Street as the Playhouse Square, for this is where the great Cleveland playhouses were located. The paradise for the art and theater lovers, the Playhouse Square houses the four famed theaters namely the Ohio Theatre , the Allen Theater , the State and the Palace. Later on the square authority, reopened the Hanna Theatre as well and are now responsible for managing it too. If you are interested in arts, plan an evening to this square with a play and a dinner in one of the plush restaurants in its locality.

Best part of Cleveland!
By TimothyR, 8/1/06
Great experience anytime! Lots of variety and beautiful theaters. Better than most in New York City in my opinion. A must do in Cleveland for visitors and residents alike!

Audience is older than the building...
By Billy, 2/24/06
The Playhouse might be the oldest regional theatre in the country, but its audience and support group is older. It's a shame that not too many young kids are ever at the shows. And, honestly, it's a shame to think what will happen to these theaters in upcoming years if more support isn't given. Also, the shows, unfortunately, aren't attracting youth, since they aren't hip shows. A real tragedy....

A Wonderful Experience for the Kids!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/19/05
Downtown in a big city can be intimidating, but our visit to see "Peter Pan" with Cathy Rigby as the star was outstanding! Although we got lost (my fault for not getting directions first) a parking attendant happily directed us to where we needed to go. The theatre was unbelievable and so professionally managed. I would recommend this to anyone living in or visiting Cleveland.

Excellent Theatre
By BrandonV, 9/13/04
Playhouse square is believed to be the second largest theatre district in the nation. It is second only to Broadway in New York. The renovated theatres are amazing. Cleveland's theatre district is one of Cleveland's best remaining examples of how it benefited from early twentieth century philanthropy when Cleveland was home to the most millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the world.
