The Cloisters

Description

The Cloisters is the medieval outpost of the Metropolitan Museum of Art . Overlooking the Hudson River, it is a deeply relaxing and spiritual place. The interlocking cloisters are faithful reconstructions of five French monasteries. They were erected between 1934 and 1938 on a site offered by John D. Rockefeller Jr. The museum here is devoted to medieval architecture and European art. The gardens are as beautiful as the chapels and cloisters. Open hours vary seasonally, check the website for details.

secluded corner of new york
By Graham, 3/24/08
Th Cloisters should be a must for anyone looking for a secluded spot or quite day out in Manhattan. We took the M4 bus up there and it takes a while but goes thru some interesting neighborhoods. It also takes you right to the front door so hard to get lost. The views from the outside of the Hudson and George Washington Bridge and its great for photos. The exhibits are amazing built into he structure itself in many cases. Incredible to think its put together using 11th ad 12th century stones and arches. We came back by the A train which is very fast. It was a nice walk down to he station with views in all directions.

A Secret Neighborhood
By e, 10/1/05
The Cloisters is a medieval museum located in one of the most pleasant and enjoyable parks in Manhattan, Ft Tryon Park. Because most Manhattanites can't visualize a Manhattan north of Harlem, this area is mostly used by those who live nearby. You can always get a choice spot to lie in the sun, you have a gorgeous view of hills, trees, and the Hudson River. Playgrounds, running paths, and picnics areas are available. There are new restaurants on Ft Washington and 187th Street and everything is not more than 10 minutes walk from the A train. After spending many frustrating moments trying to navigate Central Park for a friend, food, or a bathroom, Ft Tryon Park is worth the simple train ride for the no-stress feeling once you get there.

Best museum north of the park
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/19/05
Unbelievable venue for one of the nation's great collections of medieval art. If you are completely unfamiliar it makes the subject interesting and penetrable.
