City Island is a tiny place, located beyond Pelham Bay in the northern part of the Bronx. It became an English settlement in 1685, and was used as a supply point for schooners traveling from Manhattan. Now the island is filled with yacht clubs, sailing schools, marinas, sail makers, and some great seafood restaurants. Enjoy the water, fresh air, and art galleries on the island. For those interested in the history of Native Americans, a Siwanoy Indian burial ground can be found at the island's highest point. Access the island from the City Island Rd bridge.
Too bad city island did not have a clear development plan; there are isolated archictectural pleasing buildings and some services that would make anyone want to spend a day there; but the overall look of the main street is a turn off. The smaller cafe type eateries are good, the larger seafood restaurants too expensive with no ambience.
Stayed at the Le Refuge. Spent one day Fishing on a Charter boat. Dinner at the Black Whale. Next day rented a sailboat for the day. Charming place, with beautiful views. hope the city has the good sense to keep it that way. Some of the newer developments, such as the ones by the bridge are an eyesore..
