MoMA - Museum of Modern Art

Description

MoMA is considered by many to be one of the best modern art museums in the world and with a major renovation recently completed by Yoshio Taniguchi, it has only become better. The building was erected in 1939 under the supervision of Edward Durrell Stone and Philip Goodwin. The galleries are filled with paintings, drawings, prints, illustrations, and photographs. Besides Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe and Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, there are plenty of other classics to view. There is also a restaurant and a museum shop. Check the website for admission prices, event times and more.

This museum is closed until 2005, they are displaying some artwork at the Queens location "MoMA QNS" but dont expect to see any of the famous works there. Starry Night and most other valuables are in storage.

Spend a Day Here
By ,
The museum is now back in its renovated location at 53rd St. and while the admission is high ($20) that also includes any films or special events on the day the ticket is purchased. We came to see the special exhibit on Cezanne and Pisarro (comtempories who often painted the same scenes) and it was fabulous beyond words. We also loved the painting galleries. We even stayed for lunch at the cafe on the 5th floor (much less crowded that the 2nd floor). Although the menu was limited and the prices looked high we had a memorable lunch (cold sesame noodle salad and seared Ahi Tuna). The best bet here is to come on a weekday and stay for a film. We were there on a Saturday morning and found it crowded, but still highly enjoyable.

An Experience Unlimited
By ,
Visiting Mueums and writing about them is my passion. I visited MOMA in October 2001. I find the place easily accessable that is one pre-requisite for any museum to become the soul of the city. Undoubtedly the modernity lies in the naming of the MOMA itself. So you enter the museum with a mind to experience what has not been experienced by you in the past. As I stepped in the veins in my blood got warmed up. I was truly excited to encounter the modernity. I looked around with thousand hearts and million eyes. At that time Giacometti' retrospective was also on view.A part of display of MOMA collection was removed to facilitate the amazing retrospective. Though the loss was mine but then Giacommetti truly desrve this honour. Nevertheless I could see some of the finest masterpieces by Matisse,Cezanne, Gaugin, VanGogh Picasso, Kandinsky, Leger, Pollock, De kooning, Rauschenberg, Rousseau and so forth . So many visionaries' vision of art displayed together. I felt truly enriched. An experience unlimited indeed. It also reinforced the artist in me. Though Ajanta and Ellora in my country superbly manifest the divine powers and supreme genius of the Indian artist but this creative world was quite different. Different in terms of place and time that determines the creation in the mind of the artist.Every work on display there speaks about the truth realised by its creators. An artist who is true to himself does not look for people around to respond to his work. Their artistic expressions evoke a spontaneous response That is the strength of the artist and the statement he has made through his respective medium. The security staff on duty is very vigil but also sensitive enough that they keep a respectable distance so as to give the viewer necessary freedom to contemplate over the artworks on display for true aesthetic experience. The lighting is right enough to enjoy the display though at places one craves for more viewing space. I sorely missed Picasso's Guernica May 1937 which was on loan for quite sometime. Some of the technology oriented art takes one beyond the perception of the truth and really tests your culturing of art What I envious is that the significant collection mostly belong to the artists of the west and is confined to MOMA only. I wish the works of some of the contemporary master artists of the east could easily be displayed alongwith these artists so that a world view of art could be seen and experienced in the true spirit of the creativity that knows no bias and bounds. It's my review of the view of MOMA which has not only renewed me intensily but energise me to have more such encounters. MOMA certainly deserves a pat on its back for their creative vision and understanding of new art for its preservation, projection and promotion and that too at a time when it was surrounded by hostility and uncertainity. The Ornamental Iron Workers are out of work
By ,
We love to visit NYC and often come here when we have the extra money. We revisited the MOMA this week. Top floor is great since we love the Cezzane (forgive us) and they finally are catching on to Francis Bacon. Forth floor is o.k. but could use more of what made NYC the art capital through the 80s. Outside of that it's your usual pile of bricks or wall transplanted from a renovation and more and more and more of this with the message that this is "The Art" along with some social propganda. In front of our hotel every morning I get coffee and set watching Midtown unfold along with the out of work ornamental iron workers. Why doesn't MOMA hire them they are as innovative as MOMA's current art. They could bring in objects from jobs and display their tools. They could record there language and movements. It Really would be more interesting.

Come here only if you are an art buff
By ,
Not being an art buff, the exhibits in this museum did not interest me. So, come here only if you're into artistic paintings and objects.

Neat and Spacious MOMA
By ,
My experience at the Museum of Modern Art was terrific; the Architecture of the Museum facility is fantastic, the cleanliness and orderliness of the art works and master piece really amazed me. There is one thing that made me think that this museum is significant to the others and that is the neatness of this museum. This museum must have been carefully been designed and arranged by well trained professionals because of the fact that lots of people visit the museum every night and day, it does not show it because its well designed and well catered for. Museum of Modern Art exposed me to some new stuff in New York City which I really admire and thinking of a revisit to NYC. First, I saw and stepped my foot in Time Square for the first time, and I experienced the Museums store; one of its kind I ever visited. I never visited a museum with its own design store. MOMA is fantastic; its an avenue to meet new people, and a place to experience great collections of mater pieces from great countries, and great artists. If I were to rate the Museum of Modern Art based on my visit, I will rate it on a scale of 10/10 because its worth its visit. Surely, am revisiting MOMA N/B FREE ON FRIDAYS!!!...

teenage daughter enjoyed it
By ,
Spent half the day here, could have spent the whole day here. I was surprised that my 16 year old daughter, who was bored at the guggenheim, really enjoyed this place. The Munsch exhibit was good and I was surprised at the quality of paintings here. I would reccommend it.

Simply Brilliant
By ,
When I went to MOMA I was somewhat excited to see the museum, I'm not really into arts so I thought it would be fun but nothing amazing. I was wrong..just after spending a few minutes in there the inner artist in me began to truly appreciate that place.. it has amazing art by some of the best artists of all time. It is a bit surreal to stand inches away from an orignal Picasso painting, you can just get lost at the MOMA for hours and truly enjoy your time there. I would highly recommend MOMA to anyone planning on visiting NYC even if you don't know much about art.

phenomenal museum
By ,
the art in this building is astounding. so many important works are held at MoMA, i couldn't even begin to do the museum's collection justice by listing them here. some certainly provoke a reaction, but that's what are can and at times, should do. definitely worth a visit.
