Amish Market

Description

This upscale market became so popular so quickly that the owners opened two other locations (one on the Eastside and one in the Wall Street area). The store offers a bevy of gourmet foods, including a prepared food bar. The seafood and meat selections are incredible, as are the fresh baked breads section and a wide array of olives by the pound. Always fresh, their fruits and vegetables are sold at farmers' market prices. Offering many ethnic foods and cooking supplies from Italian to Thai, a visit to the Amish is always a treat. Catering menu is also available.

Indispensable
By ,
I used live a few blocks from it, and it is THE place for a serious neighborhood foodie to shop at. The price/quality on fruits and vegetables is much better than local supermarkets (Food Emporium, Gristedes, etc), and the selection of spices, cheeses, pastas, etc is great. The meat / fish selection is ok, but go to Esposito's and Seebreeze Fish market for that instead. Staff is helpful and friendly. A great place to check out whether you live in the area, or are just visiting.

Rip off

I am done with Amish market. I live around the corner and I have gone often out of convenience. No more. Almost every time I've been there, something has gone wrong. They forget to put something in my bag. The milk is bad. I order coffee and get hot chocolate. The girls in the check out stand are more interested in talking to each other than ringing you up, and will turn their backs and ignore you until it's convenient for them to do their job. The prices on all their food, standard or gourmet, are simply ridiculous and about 20% more than you would pay at other gourmet markets for the same or better quality. Do not waste your time and money here.

Nothing Amish Here
By ,
I am Mennonite, and was in the city with visiting. I'm sure the quality oif the food is good, but to be honest, I found the entire thing amusing, and took loads of pictures to use in my teaching. I have no idea what Amish coffee (also in decafe) is. And, there is nothing Amish abuto sushi. I also know of no AMish market (real ones in OH and PA) with an oilve bar. Looked like a really great market, but nothing Amish about it. It is almost an insult that someone would use the name to attract people. Few people in the location we visited spoke English, and none of the languages I heard was German. There was also no sign of any traditional Amish foods. I looked to see if they carried any of the cheeses or butters (they do not, most are imported. Apparently the owners think imported are better than authentic Amish cheeses). So, while the market is a great store, don't expect anything Amish. I realyl wondered if the people who owned the store had ever met anyone Amish or would know someone Amish if they saw them.

Great market!
By ,
I first was there in March of 2002 on a visit to NY. I returned Nov. 2006 and a visit back was on my agenda. And it was even better than before. If I lived in NYC, I would probably go there daily/weekly. I just love the selection and the prices are great. Everything is so fresh also. I highly recommend spending some time there on your visit.
