Corner Bookstore (The)

Description

This tiny Upper East Side bookstore has an exceptionally friendly staff that is very much involved with their customers, and was the blueprint for the local bookshop featured in the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks film "You've Got Mail". Besides offering a plethora of reading material, including an extensive children's collection, this neighborhood meeting spot posts a bulletin board with listings for dog and cat sitters, French lessons and tutors on English composition. Classics, quick reads, best sellers and travel books are available, among other offerings at The Corner Bookstore.

This is store is cataclysmically awesome
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/15/09
I could go on for hours. The incredible selection, the intelligent and hardworking staff...The Corner Bookstore is one of the last gems in corporate America, and the preeminent retailer of all things fabulous. I am somewhat befuddled by the previous reviews, since I have never gone to the Bookstore without receiving a smile along with excellent recommendations. I love to sit on the conveniently placed benches and delve into another piece of scintillating fiction that was reccomended by the well-read manager. Long live independents!

What happened to the store?
By Chicamorena, 12/13/08
Wow, I'm incredulous at the last three reviews before this one. I used to work a block away from the store and I practically lived in the store on my lunch hour. The staff was helpful and friendly and would order any book I wanted if they didn't have it in stock. This manager must be new. Somebody needs to give him a clue before he drives away all the customers. It's not as if it's the only bookstore in the neighborhood; there's a Barnes & Noble only a few blocks away. People came to The Corner Bookstore mainly for the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. If it's changed all that much for the worse, they'll stop shopping there. I'd hate to see the store close because of an obnoxious manager.

The rudest staff in NYC
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/1/08
I was so disheartened after each of my several trips to this bookstore. I wanted to love it as I want to love all small, independent bookstores but the staff here is just the worst. The manager specifically is beyond rude. He is abrupt, disinterested, condescending and just pretty terrible. He has never once been helpful or kind in my many trips to the store. I believe it is people like him that make small independent stores fail. The staff is okay, although none of them impressed me much. They all seem somewhat miserable to be there and also all seem very annoyed by the children present. The manager, especially, seems intolerant of children which is odd as there is a whole children's section right in the middle of the store. It is such a cute, warm-looking store and I so wish I had something positive to say. The owner needs to do a staff overhaul and get some kind, warm, friendly people in there. The manager, especially, must be a very different sort. Maybe just someone who didnt look pained to be there and beyond pained every time he was asked a question. That would be a good start.

Truly terrible manager
By adorebooks37, 11/12/08
The manager at this bookstore, not to mention a good chunk of the staff, is so rude that it is nearly unbelievable. I am an avid reader who adores independent, small bookstores like this but am beyond dismayed at the rude and condescending attitude of the manager and some staff there. Some staff are nicer but the tone is set by the churlish and ungracious manager. I have tried to make this my corner bookstore but it is not going to happen as I cannot be treated so inconsiderately at a place where I spend a lot of money.

Wonderful store, but HORRID staff!
By yahoo contributer, 11/12/08
I have been coming to this bookstore for ages and have been consistently dismayed by the awful, rude and disinterested staff-- most notably the manager. He is rude and angry and offers terse replies to questions and is frequently hostile to younger children in the store. I have bee a very financially loyal customer for years now (buying at least $60-100 a week in merchandise) and he has never deigned to be anything more than supercilious. I wish I loved this bookstore; I love the look and the concept but it is, sadly, ruined by the aggressively rude manager who does not, in any way, appreciate a good customer.

The Amazing little bookstore
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/1/08
I love the corner bookstore. It is in a wonderful location and should remain standing. It contains great books, and is a wonderful bookstore to use when needed. I also like the fact that you are able to read books when inside, so you can pick and choose. The cat Murphy is really nice, and so are the people that work there.

Great!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/18/07
The staff can be a little unfriendly at times. And they are a bit understaffed. A very cozy and "homey" enviornment. With cute, fat cats roaming the shelves, this store is great for kids and adults.
