You are always guaranteed literature from some of the best authors at this tiny East Village outpost for second hand books. Everyone from Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck to Norman Mailer and Charles Bukowski is represented here. Despite tight quarters, the browsing experience at Alabaster Bookshop is never harried or cramped. Since all titles are used, the prices are very affordable. For extreme bargains, be sure to check the selection of titles on the sidewalk outside the shop.
Escape the chaos and sensory overload of Strand's 8 Miles of books at this little bookshop around the corner on 4th avenue between 12th and 13th. The selection is meager compared with the offerings at Strand, but here the light is pretty and the shelves are wood and you can browse quietly for a good novel or a book of poetry or literary criticism. This place is a throwback to the time before mega-bookstores. I remember the feeling of browsing in cozy bookstores from my childhood. It's hard to find that feeling much anymore in NYC. Support the little guys!!! I'd hate to see this wonderful little gem get drowned in the tide of big boy bookstores.
