White Horse Tavern

Description

This old-fashioned West Village pub dates back to 1880, and it is famous for being the location where the great poet Dylan Thomas drank himself to death. Shy poetry enthusiasts might be disturbed by the rowdy after-office bar scene and the greasy food that only a drunk could love. Nevertheless, the place is oozing with history and character. In good weather, there is additional seating outside in front of the bar.

A Temple
By frostyneil, 12/26/06
What are these other reviewers talking about??? SACRILEGE!!! The place is a temple. You's smell a little too if you were 125 years old! The White Horse is a classic. A neighborhood bar with some very serious pedigree. The food is as good as it gets in bars. The bartenders are always courteous, even to the tourists. Dylan Thomas, Norman Mailer and Jack Kerouac are only a few of the famous writers who drank and supped there. The place is a temple. It's also a great neighborhood bar. Those other reviewers must be looking for the the Hyatt or W. Here's a tip for them. Stay out of the Village. (I can only imagine their review of the Back Fence!)

Amen
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/17/04
Well said, whoever wrote that last one. Friends from out of town sometimes want to go here because of its past. Considering the place smells bad and is full of testosterone- and beer-poisoned idiots, the staff has a lot of attitude.
