Around since the 1950s, this dessert shop is a classic to older Upper East Side residents, who in turn have made their children fans of this incredibly popular spot. Lines out the door do not deter families from waiting for a table or ordering takeout dessert. Small, white circular tables are scattered throughout the room, past which fast moving waiters weave back and forth. The menu features American food such as hamburgers, but dessert is what you really want to come here for. Be sure to try the famous frozen hot chocolate.
First of all, the only food that was worth the value was the desserts. I ordered a burger with chili for $16.50, and my mother ordered the shrimp salad with alvacados for $18.50. My friend also ordered a sandwich for $13.50. Our wait for our food was literally 35 whole minutes. We had 3 different waiters. The first one was distant, the second one was nice to us, but the third one seemed nasty to us. He did not even smile when we thanked him for all of our food. That really turned us off. Our suggestion is to eat your dinner at Patsy's pizza resturant across the street, and then come to Serendipity's for the desserts. Also try to get a reservation. We saw poor unfortunate souls aging while they were waiting to be seated.
My wife and I had an extremely horrible experience at this place. This restaurant was the most children unfriendly place in NY. First of all, there are no strollers allowed inside the restaurant, nor do they have any high chairs. All the waiters and managers are gay, and give straight people with children a nasty look. There is a minimum of $8.50/person (which isn't posted anywhere), oh ya and a 15 month old child is considered a person by the management. The decoration on the ceiling is hung extremely low, tall people beware! The frozen hot chocolate wasn't all that either.
My recommendation: DON'T GO THERE!!!!
The experience was awesome, however the service was bad. Do not reccomend to have dinner here.. It took them forever to bring the food.
It was my first time in New York and friend suggested it last minute. Gotta say were lucky to find a reservation.
You definetly need to make resrvaion as they are completely full. The place is small but loved the atmosphere. Call at least two weeks in advanced.
The dessert was awesome.. It is worth every penny. It is delicious.. Definetly would go back, just skip the dinner..
I have to say that I had to visit this place... i had to book reservation at least a month before coz its impossible to get reservations if your booking just a weeks notice. especially if your visiting during the holiday season.
Like most people, myself and my girlfriend were tourists and wanted to visit the famous restaurant for abvious reasons... we both loved the movie and were just determined to get a table for too before we headed home to the philippines.
here's a personal tip: DONT EAT DINNER HERE!
instead, eat dinner elswhere and have dessert at serendipity... dinner is teriible.
the Desserts on the other hand are terrific! the famous frozen hot choco indeed lived up to its hype.
and btw... not good for groups and children.
staff are a bit distant and impersonal...
We've been to Serendipity twice, and both times we waited for two hours in cold January weather. We sat at the table where the actors from the movie Serindipity sat. The place is so small, I don't know how they got movie cameras, etc in to film!! There is a small waiting area, which was crammed with a rather unhappy crowd, and a very burned out host who probably dreads the hordes that line up every day to get their names on the waiting list. The frozen hot chocolate is very good---but we didn't want to order as much food as we had to to pay the minimum per person charge, which they very rudely stick to to the penny! Of course Oprah loved it--she got fantastic service and I'm sure there was no wait for her!!
The food is terrible and so is the service. The place is too noisy.
But the frrrozen hot chocolate is very good, I recommend to share it with someone else 'cause it's big!
I've heard the desserts are good too. So I think this is not a good place to have lunch or dinner but to have a dessert.
I was a little worried to try Serendipity after reading reviews. Am I gald we did! It turned out to be a fabulous experience that I would recommend again and again! We started out with a Frrrozen hot chocolate, and no they are not overrated! Heaven in a glass! We had a sandwich with turkey, asparagus, jarlsberg and Russian dressing which I have been craving ever since! We ended with they YuDuFunDu, which I could lick the chocolate out of the bowl it was so good. Our waiter was fun and seemed as excited as we were, which of course he was not, but at least he acted like it. We were quoted 1.5 hour wait and it was down to the minute! Oh...and we saw a celebrity there too (think past SI swimsuit model). Don't miss Serendipity, no matter what you read!
Amazing...the desserts are simply amazing.
Okay, so the wait is an hour plus on weekend nights...go eat pizza at Patsy's across the street and have dessert later.
The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate was a chocolate lovers dream, and I'd wait more than an hour for another one.
Huge portions, decadent dessert...
If heaven were food, this is what it would taste like.
Let me start off saying the Dessert is AMAZING! We had both the frozen hot chocolate and the indulgent brownie one and both times I have had it it was great.
I went there we waited for 1.5 hrs for a table, then it took 20 minutes to get a waiters attention. I had the pasta and the portions were VERY small and not work the $16, because I had to stop by a mcdonalds and get something to eat after we left. We shared a frozen chocolate and that was worth it.
The guy at the door would be one of the most rude and inconsiderant people I have ever incountered. People were coming in and putting thier name on the waiting list and we were 3rd for a table (still took 30 min) so my sister in law was holding the door for the people and he YELLED at her, not asked her screamed shut the door, and she said do you want me to shut in in the face of your clients and he said, doesn't matter just shut it. The people around us were also appaled at his rudeness. He should be fired because any other person they pull off the street could do his job with more class and elegance. That aside the desserts were perfect as before.
Summary: Worth it for desserts, but don't expect any good service, and eat a full meal somewhere else.
