This high caliber Japanese restaurant features exquisite sushi, greaseless tempura, extraordinary specials, elegant decor and a large bill; most people would agree it is worth every penny. Owner Nobu Matsuhisa (who is a partner here and at Next Door Nobu along with Drew Nieperont and Robert De Niro) features a mix of traditional Japanese food, with some French and even Peruvian touches. A piece of sashimi may be sprinkled with fresh chiles, and sauteed sea bass topped with seared foie gras. Try the chef's tasting menu for a real treat.
With all of the hype surrounding Nobu and all the celebrity sightings, it sounds as if it might be priced out of most people's league. Not necessarily!
We did not have the 'omakase' (chef's choice) that so many people recommend, because the waiter himself didn't recommend it, saying it could be great or terrible on any given night. Instead he gave great recommendations for particular dishes.
For two people, we ordered the following:
raw yellowtail with jalapeno
rock shrimp tempura
black cod with miso
snow pea tempura
house sushi roll
bento box chocolate souffle dessert
The bill came to $139 before tip, which I found very reasonable for the amount and quality of food.
The yellowtail and the rock crab were two of the most shockingly wonderful flavors I have ever experienced. These were both recommendations from the waiter. He also said the black cod was 'a must', but we found that dish only moderately delicious in comparison.
The omakase is priced anywhere from $80 to $120 (and up) per person, and it sounds like a bit of a crapshoot.
One interesting note - most patrons were in very casual clothing (read: t-shirts and jeans) and we were overdressed in a dress/shirt and tie.
My sister and I visited on a recent trip and were surprised by the excellent value lunch menu. The drinks were also reasonably priced and the service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent and was fresh and innovative. We had a great time.
The food was amazing! You must order the Omikase preset dinner (with the Toro)--the chef's personal creation. The dishes were beautifully garnished and the fish was fresh and delicious. The staff was very knowlegeable and described each dish that was brought out...Nobu even brews it's own beer! The highlight of the evening had to be the chocolate soufle. It was an amazing meal and experience!
