Legion Of Honor

Description

This museum houses more than 87,000 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and tapestries. Some pieces date back 4,000 years. The main floor is dedicated to the museum's permanent collection, much of which features the works of Rodin. European and ancient art are also on display at the Legion of Honor. The lower garden level features temporary exhibitions, ranging from Andy Warhol to Francis Bacon. Take a break in the museum cafe, which features light snacks and has outdoor seating. The gift shop, though small, has a nice selection of postcards, books, posters, jewelry and some reproductions from this and other fine arts museums.

It has Rembrant, Rodin and Rubens
By Geary, 11/9/11
As my subject title states....any museum that represents those "Three Rs"....you really are blessed in just that. However, you add Monet and Bougereau and it's a done deal for Fine Art satisfaction!!! As an artisan myself I must say It's one of my favorite museums of all.

Went with my summer art class
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/5/10
I in fact enjoyed it. i'm a young black male with very different interests but it was pretty interesting. It was a quite beautiful building and though I was woke at 8 o'clock in the morning on a sunday to witness it, I feel it was definitely worth the while of going and would strongly recommend other young people to go check it out. Sure it's not the "norm" for me but ya gotta try new things.

Magnificent setting
By Melinda, 6/16/08
The real show here is the magnificent setting, the beautiful building, and the special exhibits--not the permanent collection. The special exhibits have been exquisite. I recently saw the Marie Antoinette exhibit, and the Vivienne Westwood exhibit. I plan to see the 4 Women Impressionists soon. I've been to museums all over this country, and Europe. I don't think any museum can match this setting for sheer beauty, overlooking the Pacific. They serve a lovely lunch with organic food; the luncheon area is full of windows with view. As you can see this is one of my favorite museums in the world. Since I live in CA, I visit often as I can.

magical walk
By The Bird's Nest, 11/30/07
My aunt took me here nearly 40 years ago. We never went inside, we walked the grounds...I frequently dream of the sculptures and the park setting, so close to the ocean and sutro ruins....I am planning a trip in '08, to bring my hubby and kids. My heart can't wait!

Legion Tour
By marthaa, 4/3/07
Youth curiosity and exploration did not feel encouraged despite the fact that the students were eager to learn more. It would have been very helpful to have staff explaining style and the time period of the artist to better understand how that played into the style. However, the value of the art itself was amazing. Very impressive content.

Great art and outdoor views
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/16/07
Great art at the Legion of Honor, and the outside architecture with a mixture of nature! Go for a walk, relax in the grass and enjoy the sun! Not far away are many other outdoor activities to do as well. Outdoor activities with some history, city views, ocean views and golfing...right next door.

Motorcycle Ride in the City
By Shadow, 1/14/07
I didn't go into the museum, but it was an excellent motorcycle ride past the Golden Gate along the coast and a great chance for some fantastic photography outside the building.

Great Art, Good Photo Opportunity!
By rachel, 12/5/06
I really loved the setting for this building; beautiful location overlooking the Bay and ocean. And set in the Presidio, so the landscaping is really nice. The building is a beautiful piece of architecture and I enjoyed the photo opportunity that afforded. The paintings and sculptures; as well as period rooms, furniture and pottery are varried and will keep an art lover busy for hours. I would definitely recommend seeing this lovely museum, it was worth the time and money. I know I can't wait to go back!
