St Patrick's Church
Description
This Roman Catholic church, dated 1851, was founded to serve San Francisco's Irish community. That commitment is reflected in the church's gold, green and white decor. Note, for example, the green-tinted rose window over the choir. The columns on either side of the nave are Connemara green marble imported from Ireland itself. What makes this neo-Gothic church especially worth seeing are the Tiffany stained glass windows glowing brightly beneath the vaulted ceiling. There are also display cases with photographs of the extensive damage to St. Patrick's during the 1906 earthquake.
Appreciate the many cultures and diversity of people.
Also, the Traditional Gothic-type Architectural Building of Worship.
Dislike the shortage of priests to administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation(Confession).
Wonderful church. Parishioners are friendly and warm . Priests are good and always deliver a relevant homily . Aside from people wandering around the church during the service which sometimes caused me to get distracted, everything is perfect.
St. Patrick is a real sanctuary for people like me who is far away from home. It gives me a sense of belonging to a Christian community. Worshipping in this church with people from various nationalities can always me you feel the Christian brotherhood. It opens your heart and your mind in understanding and embracing people from every different cultures. During the service you can sense the presence of God and the unity among the churchgoers coming from different parts of the world. This is one of the most powerful feeling- us united in the presence of our Lord. I also commend the enlightening sermons of the priests and the wonderful singing of the choir, as well as the warm hospitality of the ushers. Thank you very much for making our worship more meaningful.
St. Patricks is an absolutely beautiful church. The building is now over 100 years old and has beautiful Irish and Italian marble. But that is not the real attraction.
Each column has a statue of a Saint in front of it and the sanctuary is both the Tridentine rite and the new rite. It is a wonderful place to worship.
Whether one is coming for Mass or to light a candle at one of the many Shrines in the Church-or coming for the architecture or the NoonTime Concerst on Wednesday at 1230 pm (after the Noon Mass); a visit to St Patrick's will renew child hood memories of peace, stability and a sense of the eternal. While built by Irish immigrants and suriving the 1906 earthquake largely untouched, today's congregation reflects in the cosmopolitan character of The City as some of us 'old timers' still call San Francisco. The only drawback is the lack of parking but MUNI goes right past the front door.
It's as close to going to Ireland as a californian can get. the walls are covered with connemara marble from Ireland. Even the pillars are made of the stuff and its ggorgeous!
