Fort Point National Historic Site, San Francisco

I loved the fact that many of the buildings are able to be inspected by visitors. Lots of exercise for people. Extremely lovely views of the Bay area.

this was one of the most momerable things i have ever done in my life. we toured the fort on one of our visits to san fran. and it was amasing. the history, the feel of it, the beauty of looking at the golden gate bridge. this is a must see for anyone who likes war history or old bldings and forts.

It's surprising how overlooked this amazing place is. Fort Point is a national historic site that is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is located in an incredibly spectacular spot directly underneath the southern landing of the Golden Gate Bridge on the site of an original Spanish fort. Its present fortress-appearance is the result of its massive fortification during before and during the Civil War as one of the principal defensive outposts of the United States on the West Coast. Among other things, it was the location of a memorable scene in Hitchcock's "Vertigo," where Jimmy Stewart prevents Kim Novak from drowning in the Pacific Ocean. I highly recommend that any visitor include Fort Point on its San Franicso itinerary, particularly if they have children. Kids -- particularly young boys -- will love exploring the hidden secrets of this wonderful fort.
