Kayak Club is a great way to get friends kayaking with an enthusiast. The center provides all the gear but lets you use your own as well. For $4, I can treat friends who have never kayaked to a day on the lake and get a fair ab/arm work out at the same time.
The cityskyline is nice and seeing egrets and occasional heron from the water rather than the lakes' edge is a nice change of view. I never knew how many mussels line the edge nor the barnacles. It's a good thing something is filtering the water and they provide snacks for the birds.
It's a flat gentle lake with directional rather than tidal flow so it will never be a strenuous workout. For that, it's best to go to the Oakland Estuary against high tide.
So I recommend sunblock, sunglasses, hat, vest, nylon capris/shorts to repel water, boat shoes and a bottle of water. It takes about an hour for a beginner to paddle the perimeter. For a tougher workout, consider the sculling boats instead of the sit in short kayaks.
Weekends now are moderately sunny and if it gets crowded, human power will take you to areas of the lake that the sail boats can't get to without wind. :+)
Bring a small towel to dry off.
Best thing I like is that it's walking distance from the 19th St Station. Don't let the stares get to you for carrying a PFD. I like using my own life jacket since I do this weekly. I've gotten a few "Back to the Future" comments. Most riders don't know about sailing/boating ops at the Lake.
It's fun and inexpensive. If the card is too much for 1 shot, try pooling funds together. There's an excellent gelato shop at 17th st BART and lots of restaurants on the Grand side for post munchies.
