Golden Gate Bridge
An engineering masterpiece, this bridge, built in 1937, towers with sturdy grace over the Golden Gate. Stretching over 4,200 feet, it is every bit as awesome an accomplishment in suspension-bridge engineering today as it was over half a century ago. Pedestrians and bike riders can access the east entrance for a jaunt on one of the world's most famous corridors. For photos, or to view the bridge in its entirety, try the spectacular lookout points located at the southeast and northeast ends. Don't miss the historic Roundhouse, a gift shop and visitors center, which boasts a fine selection of souvenirs, and an informative exhibit about the bridge's construction and history.
I had heard about the golden gate bridge many times in my life, although i had never seen it in person, i felt i had a good grasp of what it was like ,even before i seen it.I was wrong! This was a mammoth ,breath taking, structural achievement that I clearly was not ready for.I was in awe!!! and twenty years later i"m still struck by it"s vastness and functionality.
There is a park at the south end of the bridge with parking. Bring a pair of binoculars and you could spend hours watching what goes on in the bay such as the ships coming and going. If you can, make sure you walk the bridge over to the Marin County side. However, if you have a fear of heights don't do it.On the north side of the bridge, take the Alexander ave exit and go up to the Marin Headlands. You get a great view of the Bridge and SF. Not for the faint of heart since rather hilly. Bring your camera!!!
the bridge IS san francisco. although parking is tough to find; the muni can take you here. walk across one of the windiest areas or better yet, do it early in the morning fog. it's only a little over a mile long, to the vista point, but what a walk. you won't feel the distance. it's a must do! walking is free; the view of san francisco is priceless. you gotta do it, if you're here.

I liked the Golden Gate bridge, because, of course, it is one of the most famous bridges in the world, and I can say that I walked all the way across it. Just a warning- I went in July, and it was still really chilly- bring a jacket! Also, if you plan to walk all the way across, it was very hard to find a cab or shuttle for the reverse trip, so be prepared to walk in both directions!
