San Francisco Zoo
See more than 250 different species of wildlife from all over the globe at the San Francisco Zoo, many of which are endangered. There are a variety of attractions including a childrens' petting zoo and an insect zoo, an Australian Walk, Penguin Island, a Primate Discovery Center, and the Otter River. It also features a one of the world's largest gorilla exhibits, a lion house, a feline conservation center, a carousel, and a kiddie train. For those looking for a more in-depth and informative visit, try the Zoo Ranger, a hand held multimedia GPS device that gives video and informative background on the exhibits as you walk around. The devices can be rented at the zoo's gift shop.
Lots of fun, even more so with a bunch of good friends or with some youngsters! Lots of animals and things to see, do and learn. The zoo is not far from the ocean/beach, so you could spend the whole day at the zoo and see the sunset on the way out. Or, you can go to the zoo, and soak in the sun after?
Not among the high-caliber zoos in the country, but certainly not a waste of an afternoon either. They have the staple animals (lions, penguins, giraffes, polar bears) standard in any zoo trip. Though the variety isn't too large, and there are plenty of empty areas.
Best part was the lion & tiger feeding (2pm) when one of the zookeepers brings the cats inside into their feeding cages. It offers an amazing up-close encounter that lets you really appreciate the animals' size and beauty.
Also, there is a great succulent collection near the giraffes - don't miss that.
I've known many kinds of animal which I just could see them on TV or books. Still has some empty spaces without trees, like a desert. Kinda hot in the summer! Anyway, great place for kids and adults also to get to know the beauty of nature...^_^
It was very hard to get around and create a nice flow. The poor signage and closed areas made my small kids 3 and 5 bored in between exhibits. When sections were closed you seemed to be stuck again, then....get out the map.....walk some more and look mysteriously for an opened section to enjoy.
The sections that worked were great and it could be a top notch Zoo, especially in it's location. Of course the train is great. But obviously no one is running the Zoo properly. It's too nice of a place to run so poorly. Also the food is not over priced, it's embarressing.
I hope it will get better soon? I will be going many times since I live in SF with small kids. Something tells me the executive staff is over paid and lazy.
the exhibits that contained animals were great... but what about all the others? there were empty animal homes scattered throughout the zoo and even an entire row of empty exhibits, signs all over said, "closed for renovation" and it really took away from the zoo experience.
The San Francisco Zoo is a great place to go for the day, with or without small children. There is plenty to do and see-they have a vast array of animals, from a lemur colony to a penguin pool. One can spend hours at the penguin pool alone watching them swim back and forth in the water, or sun-bath on their rocks.
It is a good idea to plan what animals you visit when around the feeding time's of your favorite animals. The sea otters are a special treat to watch during feeding time as they tend to hide during the rest of the day.
The food is priced as you would expect amusement park food to be priced-way too expensive for what you are getting.
The San Francisco Zoo is no San Diego Zoo...but it is still a great way to spend the day!
The san Francisco zoo is a waste of money. Too many closed exhibits. There are no elephants here. The only thing my son enjoyed was the train ride. If you want to see good zoo and your in ohio try the the Columbus Zoo.
We decided to go here on vacation, and we could have not asked for more! Although the food was pretty pricey there, it was okay because we had ate ahead of time. Parking is very difficult to find. Be prepared to have your walking shoes on. From this experience, I got a lot of exercise, fresh air because it is across the street from Ocean Beach, and I got to see lots of "cool" animals!
