See more than 250 different species of wildlife from all over the globe here, many of which are endangered. There are a variety of attractions including childrens' petting zoo and an insect zoo, an Australian Walk, Penguin Island, a Primate Discovery Center, and the Otter River. It also features a one of the world's largest gorilla exhibits, a lion house, a feline conservation center, a carousel, and a kiddie train. For those looking for a more in-depth and informative visit, try the Zoo Ranger, a hand held multimedia GPS device that gives video and informative background on the exhibits as you walk around. You are able to rent them for a day at the zoo's gift shop.

So much history
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/28/09
I have been coming to the zoo since I was a toddler. I adored it as a kid and while I am sorry to see old things change: the elephants, feeding time in the Lion House, and Monkey Island in particular, there are positive changes happening and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

WHAT A LET DOWN
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/19/09
My family and I visited the zoo approximately 2 yrs ago and it was a nice experience. Since then we returned and it was such a let down. We only saw about 5 animals and the place looked like it needed rennovations. We wont be returning to the SF zoo any time soon.

Go to the Oakland Zoo instead.
By David, 05/10/09
This zoo has been in a decaying orbit for many years. They never built the elephant exhibits that they should have and lost the ability to keep elephants. The death of a zoo patron by a tiger reflects poor animal care and exhibit design. The primate conservation and education exhibits were once first-class, but have been allowed to completely deteriorate. The chimpanzee concrete exhibit is beyond appalling. WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS ZOO?!! How could a world-class city have such a lousy zoo? The nearby Oakland Zoo is a much better zoo in all respects. The animal habitats are modern and the animal care is first class.

Doubt we'll ever go back....
By Anna, 12/03/08
After a long hiatus from visiting the Zoo, our recent visit was a major disappointment Far too many exhibits are closed. It looks like a ghost town. My 7 year old was very disappointed that the exhibit with the anaconda was closed. There were no other snakes... which is his primary interest. Only two exhibits truly have merit: the grizzly exhibit and the first exhibit you see upon entry with the giraffes. The playground needs major upgrades.

Horrible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/16/08
This zoo like any other is horrible. No animal of any kind doesn't want to be in a cage

So Sad
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/10/08
I first visited the zoo in 1977 - and it was disappointing then. When I re-visited it in Sept. 2008 - evern more disappointing!!! I can't belive how the animals conditions are - very sad. Why isn't something being done about it - any animal activist group - screaming for change and animal welfare???

saddest zoo I have visited!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/16/08
we have been to many american and british zoos and this was the saddest experience we have had. You could have fit the animals they have in a zoo a quarter of the size! Empty enclosures everywhere and a lot of the animals where old which isnt a problem but you could tell by the rest of the zoo they wouldn't be replaced. Another sad thing was the amount of cages with one of the species, this wa perhaps the saddest thing! on the way out I flicked through a History of the zoo book and saw that 10 to 20 years ago this would have been a great zoo with many photos of animals they didn't exhibit now. So I had to speak to somebody to ask questions and was told that a lot of the zoo wasnt disabled friendly so these areas had to be shut until it was sorted. I was also told that the last of the hippos had been put to sleep due to old age.

Love visiting on the weekend
By CatherineS, 02/22/08
I enjoy visiting the zoo whenever I can. Recently remodeled, there are many new exibits including a grizzy bear pair, and a new african exibit. a path takes you through and around the african pen where there are a mix of animals, including a new baby giraffe. There is also a petting zoo where you can feed barn yard animals, an insect zoo, a merkat manor exibit, as well as lions, tigers and bears, oh my. (and hippos, penguins, aligators... and the peacocks are free range!)

Living in a box
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/10/08
Many of the animals I saw looked awful, and most of their living spaces looked way to small. I was very sad having seen animals look like that.
