Make a Reservation online before you go...Plan It!
Prior to arriving in San Francisco, we made online reservations to go to Alcatraz. As we approached the 'pay booth' there were 2 lines. One line with prior reservations (ours) had no one in line; and the other line that must have had at least 100 people in line to buy tickets. Amazing what a little planning does. Do yourself a big favor and make the needed reservations online. After getting our boat boarding ticket we only waited a few minutes before boarding to go to Alcatraz.
Alcatraz is a must see if you're going to San Francisco. The history there begins as a Fort (Civil War era and after) to protect the San Francisco Bay and Harbor, then the Penal Institution (which most people know it for) and subsequently when the Prison closed, as an unwilling captive of an American Indian group who took it over for a short period of time attempting to confiscate it essentially...then as a preserved part of the Penal system in San Francisco. So, as you can imagine each period in time left their mark, that can still be seen today, on this little island.
It's understandable, after viewing the island, why the penal institution was closed. Everything (and I mean everything) had to be shipped in. There is a reason it is called 'The Rock'. There is a self-guided tour with headsets to take you thru the entire prison. You can stay as long as you like in any area...as long as you board the boat at the last time designated for that day.
Very informative with specific details of how the prisoners ate, slept, exercised...and just survived during the prison days. There is also history left behind and addressed when it was a Fort with Soldiers stationed on the 'Rock' as a prison.
We went in May of 2009 and it was cold so dress appropriately or you will regret it. Remember this is 'Northern' California on the coast, so keep that in mind. Northern California and Southern California (where we're from) are very different...climate included.
Glad we went and this is one of the few 'Tourist attractions' that you will go to and actually find souvenirs that are affordable and not outrageously priced, which was cool as we bought for every member of our family. Enjoy your trip!
