Alcatraz Island, San Francisco County

I would be sure to buy tickets in advance. We were in San Francisco for 3 days and 2 nights and we barely got to do the tour. The next day when we went to get on the ferry the sign said for the next tours were already sold out until 5 days later. It could be because it was the end of March and Spring Break, but it was very busy. So get your tickets in Advance if you can and get the audio tour included. The tour was good and very informational. Will do it again.

I would recommend this place if you are in the San Fran. area. It was really fun taking a boat to the island. It doesn't take very long at all. While you are there, you can do anything you'd like. Self-guided tour, audio tour, or guided tour. It is interesting and fun to learn about the history of Alcatraz. Very beautiful views of the city as well.

The overall experience was wonderful. Family trip, retired folks, youg couples, everyone seems to enjoy this. the boat trip is a wonderful added perk. bring a sweater and wear comfortable shoes for there's quite a bit of walking.

When i was young my father took me on a tour of the prison. it was so awesome. they walked you around told you about the history of the rock. they locked you in a cell to show you what it was like. growing up i never forgot my experence there.

I remember Alcatraz as being the place that they brought small tour groups to and you were led by a tour guide and you got to take in the isolated feel of Alcatraz. Now, they push as many people into there as the building can stand and instead of having a tour guide, you have a bunch of mindless tourists with headsets on listening to an automated tour. I really lost the feeling of isolation and I didn't enjoy the tour one bit. Walking around the island on my own was far more fun than being in the cell house with 10,000 other people.

What a great outing! You can see the City golden gate and are located in an old prison with tons of history. Very informative. Tends to have lots of people, so best time to go may be in the winter, but the ferry ride will be a little rougher.

Awesome experience and a great way to learn about history! I would definitely go back to catch some of the things I missed the first time there. I would recommend this activity for any tourist!

Going to go visit Alcatraz was fun and educational. There's always a different guest speaker who's knowledgeable about the place. Alcatraz is one of those once in a life time things to do and my only complain was that i should of taken a thicker jacket.

It was a fun short boat ride out the the Island. The line was a little long. The visit to The Rock was very interesting. It is very well documented and informative. I recommend the Audio Tour. They showed you the cells of Al Capone, the Bird Man, and other criminals and gangsters. The prison was really wide open and you could see alot. It could not have been a very nice place to do time. JUST DO NOT LOOK UP! The island has the largest seagull population on the West Coast and they drop bombs fairly regularly. You can hear it coming like 2-3 seconds in advance, but then its too late. There is a nice gift shop where you can get some fun prisonesque gifts. Certainly worth seeing if you go to San Fransisco.
