A prominent street in the Financial District of the city, Howard Street occupies a wide stretch. Major buildings and other important establishments are all seated at this main junction. The street is also a popular attraction among locals for its vast stretch of road that facilitates easy racing. The place is a common choice for car races and other such track activities. The famous Bay to Breakers foot race also commences from this street.
I've lived here for seven years. Bay to Breakers is without a doubt the best day of the year in San Francisco, every single year. It is the perfect crystalization of what it means to be San Francisco. A hundred thousand people come out to Have Fun. Period, end of story. B2B is better than Alcatraz, The Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, the cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf (yikes), the Blue Angels, and Golden Gate Park, COMBINED! (Well, B2B has Golden Gate Park in it, so that's cheating).
If you enjoy fun, you will make sure that your visit to the city puts you at Embarcadero and Howard at about 7:30am on the third Sunday in May.
The annual Bay to Breakers race is absolutely the coolest event in SF (well, possibly with the exception of a Castro Halloween, but the police have been clamping down on that). Many people register for the race, but there are plenty of "phantom" runners/walkers. The best part is seeing everyone in their wacky costumes, and enjoying a nice, long walk through some very scenic parts of the city. There are the occasional nude runners, but I guess it wouldn't be a San Francisco event without it. Truly, a great SF tradition!
