Coit Tower

Description

Conventional wisdom holds that this monument is shaped like a fire-hose nozzle. It is not, at least not by design. The tower is the gift of Lilly Hitchcock Coit, an eccentric heiress who managed to stand out in a city that teems with eccentricity. Lilly's particular passion was for the San Francisco Fire Department. So, when the money she left in her will for the city's beautification was used to construct the art deco tower on Telegraph Hill in 1932, people made assumptions. The view from here is one of the most impressive in San Francisco, taking in the Bay, two bridges, and the Marin Headlands. Inside, the first floor is decorated with excellent murals, commissioned in 1933, that depict San Francisco's history.

Breath-taking Views from an Historical Landmark
By ,
While Coit Tower may be a bit hard to get to re: parking sometimes, it's well worth the time investment. The views from this majestic landmark are truly spectacular. Both Bay Area natives and newbies alike always love this special part of San Francisco.

beautiful view-but aware the dogs!
By ,
I like behind Coit tower. Since I moved to North Beach, I've often gone up there to read a book and enjoy the view. BUT there are dogs without leashes. I've been bitten my book TWICE by these dogs, but the owner said " he loves a book" instead of any apologies.... I also saw that the dog bit tourist's bag and bottle of water.....of course the owner never said" sorry".... SO I strongly recommend to watch out the dogs during enjoying the view and taking a picture! AND TO DOG OWNERS- PLEASE PUT A LEASH ON YOUR LOVELY DOG!!

Best daytime view of San Francisco!!!!!
By ,
This is the best daytime view of San Francisco. Bring your camera and a high zoom lens. There are great shots of the Business District, The Ferry Building Market Place, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco's rolling hills. I do not recommend coming here at night time as Coit tower is closed at night and the trees block most of your view. If your able, the idle way to go to this famous landmark is to walk up it rather then drive as their is limited parking at the top. Park your car near Ghirardelli Square in Fishermans Wharf and take the Hyde/Powell Cable Car up Hyde to Hyde and Filbert. The "Crockedest Street in the world" (Lombard street) is two streets before Filbert. Filbert and Hyde provides a great shot of Coit Tower. Filbert also happens to be one of the steepest streets of San Francisco (31.5 degrees). Then walk from the top of Filbert and Hyde, down Filbert toward Coit Tower to the Filbert stairs. I must warn you though . . . this walk is not for the weak hearted . . . but it does provide one of the best ways of appreciating San Francisco's landscape first hand. Walk up the Filbert Stairs and then to the Coit Tower. Depending on you next stop in San Francisco you can take any other stairs going down but I prefer the Greenwich Street Stairs which will lead you to the Pier. Enjoy and remember to bring some water for the walk.

I Love San Francisco
By ,
Coit Tower is so nice day or night. The grounds are neat and clean. The view is spectacular. We have met the nicest people just by walking around. Our family makes it a point to take a yearly picture there. It is a little tricky to find if you have never been there, But ask a local and they are never less than helpful and kind, But you can easily find a map to all local points of interest. We highly recommend Coit Tower and San Francisco.

Coit
By ,
It was as great view and I really enjoyed the murals. We did not go up to the top, rather just walked the grounds. That was enough as we did not want to pay the fee for all four of us to go to the top.

Nice, fun, and a different view.
By ,
Coit Tower is nice, fun, and a different view, but can get a bit cold (even in the summer) due to it's location. It shows some neat SF history and gives you a chance to view the city from the top corner of the Bay.
