SF Surf Shop
Local surfers head to this independent surf shop for gear, advice, or just to hang out. The well-stocked store carries factory direct surfboards as well as used boards in good condition. Many of the surfboards are marked with the SF logo, popular with both locals and tourists. The store also carries apparel like wet suits, board shorts, and tees. You'll find the prices are reasonable and it's just down the street from the Great Highway and the Pacific Ocean, where big waves meet the shore.
SF surf is a REAL surf shop. If you want a board custom made there is no better place in the city to go. They don't have a large selection of clothes... But most real surf shops don't. They do have everything a surfer needs to surf.
I had a couple of boards shaped by john. He's a really nice guy and makes amazing boards. The atmosphere in the shop is really relaxed. Some surf shops make you feel like they are doing you a favor by even talking to you. Kyle and John are really easy going guys that are stoked to be doing what they are and it shows. It's like a party in there, especially on Saturday/Sunday. I'd recommend going there for sure....
John Schultze is the ONLY custom surfboard shaper in San Francisco and is a World Class boardbuilder. Paint, Tint, Polish, Nose and Tail Blocks... this guy is a diamond in the rough. There's also unique hoodies and T's only found at SF Surf Shop. They don't have many of the accesories but they'll tell you who does and how to get there.
This shop seems to be the true hub of the Ocean Beach surfing community. These are REAL PEOPLE.
I went in last Saturday looking for a used board, a leash, and some wax. I was a little intimidated with yet another local board shop as the ones I had just been to were staffed by idiots and were way overpriced and had nothing used for sale at all. John not only had exactly what I was looking for but showed me the selection of hand made boards that he shapes himself in the shop as well as gave me some excellent advice on the local spots to catch some killer curl this season. I've never seen a sweeter shape then his hand shaped boards and when I split the one I just picked up in two I'm coming back for one of those. They are well within my stingy price range too. I needed a full setup and he threw in two blocks of his favorite wax, a leash for my new board, and a bunch of stickers for free, not to mention all of the great advice!!! I really felt like I can count on the shop to be there for me when I need gear or even just some friendly help. I'm a customer for life now. Thanks for being so old school and cool John. Its rare to find a shop like this anymore.
