House of Bagels
It is not fancy but it has racks and racks of freshly made bagels waiting to be put in the display counters, all of them made by a family that has been in the business for years and is still taking the orders behind those counters. Classic bagels, chewy and dense are made here the old-fashioned way-boiled, baked and broiled. Classic varieties, including garlic, salt and sesame with a few new-fangled flavors like blueberry. It also stocks halvah, stuffed bialy and babka in chocolate and cinnamon flavors as well as schmears to die for.
It is not fancy, but it has racks and racks of freshly made bagels, all of them made by a family that has been in the business for years and is still taking the orders behind those counters. Classic bagels, chewy and dense, made the old-fashioned way: boiled and then baked. Classic varieties, including garlic, salt, and sesame, and a few new-fangled flavors like jalepeno. Also, house made schmears and fresh baked challah and the best Rye bread I've ever had.
Visiting my parents in San Francisco for more than a few days used cause in me a longing for my daily bagel and craem cheese ritual (I live in the bagel capital, New York).
After discovering House of Bagels at 5030 Geary, I can say that real New York bagels can be found in San Francisco!!! My favorite is Onion with their homemade lox and onion cream cheese! I was surprised to see it wasn't red like the L&O cheese from home and I learned it is because they don't use any food coloring-- just lox, green onion and whipped cream cheese! Fantastic!
Apparently this store has been in business for over 40 years (don't know why I hadn't heard of it sooner)!
It's the oldest restaurant in San Francisco and the newly completed historical renovation has brought new vitality to the area.
The dining rooms are comfortable and the atmosphere is relaxing. Seafood specialties are skillets of mussels, shrimp and crab ...
The elaborate Kingfisher feather ornaments you see here come from the Ch'ing Dynasty (1644 1912). If they seem familiar, it
is because they were borrowed for the feature film The Last Emperor. You will find other ancient treasures in ...
