This historic restaurant has been serving loyal patrons and celebrities alike since 1908. Deeply rooted in San Francisco history, it holds a position in literary history as well. Writer Dashiell Hammett often visited the dark-panelled restuaurant with white linen tablecloths and mentioned it in his novel 'The Maltese Falcon'. Sam Spade ordered the chops. Try one of the dishes featured in 'Gourmet Magazine' such as Chicken Jerusalem or Oyster Wellington. The wine list, featuring California selections, is serviceable with a good bottle starting at $15. In addition, there is nightly jazz music.

EXCELLENT! BRAVO!

This place is great. After having so many disappointing meals in the North beach "tourist trap" John's grill was a breath of fresh air. This is where the locals go for a great meal. There are old pictures of san francisco on the wall. The tables have white linen table cloths. It's like going back in time 85 years. The food is well worth money as you leave very full. I have eaten here several times and everything is great. I have had the "sam spade" special and it's to die for. Great steaks and chops and superb wine. This place is as good as the "stinking rose" is bad. Don't miss out on the best restaurant in "baghad by the bay". WONDERFUL!
