Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe
It was during the Gold Rush that French immigrant and bread maker Isadore Boudin first hit on his recipe for sourdough bread that earned him a place in San Francisco history. The baking method hasn't changed in all that time. Other sourdough bakeries have come and some have gone but for many native San Franciscans, this is the only sourdough that matters. The company expanded into the restaurant business a few years back where, in a casual setting you can get either good clam chowder or a huge salad in a bowl made from their signature sourdough. Sandwiches, pizza and a selection of bakery dessert treats are also on the menu. This is a great place for a quick lunch.
We went to the Fisherman's Wharf location. The sourdough was of course, excellent. Two of us had clam chowder in a bread bowl, which was quite good. One of us was on a diet, and she had a bit of trouble finding something to order. Their bakery has tons of windows so you can watch, and even talk to, the bakers as they work, making it a fun place for kids.
You know, I've given this place several chances, but the host staff is unbelievably rude. You get the impression they don't want your business, which is a shame, because the view is good, and well who doesn't love a bread bowl? The gay day shift bartender was incredibly friendly and generous, so eat at the bar with him, and you won't be disappointed.
