What began as a roadhouse with a less than savory reputation has become a local upscale favorite while retaining a bygone flavor with its vintage decor. There is also the ghost that is said to haunt Moss Beach Distillery, which adds a uniquely supernatural note, although there are no guarantees that she will appear. What will appear is great food served up by a friendly staff that knows both the daily specials and the history of the place and is happy to explain both to you. The seafood here is always fresh and grilled over mesquite for a Southwestern flavor. You can also get prime rib, steaks and great crispy salads; or sip a drink from the full bar and watch the glorious sunset.

Waste of time and money

Don't patronize the sleazy owners of this tacky joint! Enjoy the view - that's free!

Fake Ghost and Bad Overpriced Food
By Mike B, 10/23/08
The view and location are outstanding, but the buck stops there. Insanely overpriced and mediocre food. They are running with the fake ghost gag and have the whole place rigged with speakers, ghostly noises, and fake appearing ghosts. They were humilated on nation wide TV when they tried miserably to fool Ghost Hunters, whom immediately uncovered all their electronic ghost props, etc. The place is a joke.

Rebirth of a favorite!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/17/07
My wife and I have been coming to the Moss Beach Distillery for years (we got engaged on the beach just north of the distillery) and have always loved the view, the ghost story, the rockin' cocktails, and snuggling up under the wool blankets on the patio. The romantic granduer of the coastline view at sunset is truly remarkable on a beautiful day. Plus, the history and the slightly old-fashioned charm have always held our interest -- the place used to be a speakeasy and rum-smuggling drop-off in the 20's! After a couple of disappointing visits (food overpriced and lackluster service) last year we stopped coming with any regularity. On a whim last weekend we dropped in to a packed full house! Great, fun, mixed crowd of tourists, locals, European travellers, and a few grizzly bikers! View at sunset was fantastic as always. Service was friendly, efficient, and professional, especially considering how busy it was. Food quality has improved substantially, with some new interesting iternational twists -- greek style grilled salmon was tender and flavorful, halibut dish over apricot couscous was exceptional (although slightly overcooked and a bit dry), grilled New York steak with truffle butter very yummy, and crab cakes some of the very best I've ever tried (and I've had them from Baltimore to Portland), just loaded with three kinds of crab! Chocolate pancakes (WHA?) for dessert with caramel was a killer way to round out the meal. I must say the Distillery is back in the swing of things. We were quite pleased as we've always had a soft spot in our heart for the MBD. The manager on duty (very pleasant and eager to please by the way) said they have a new chef on board. Keep up the good work! Is it my imagination or did prices get more reasonable?

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/26/04
I've been goin here for years. Many in the Bay Area know about Moss Beach but they won't let on too much because this place is one of the coolest places on the coast.......simply hang out.....the patio is awesome and watch the sun go down on the Pacific.....cold at night???.....no problem....they have heavy wool blankets to wrap around you. It is like being on a cruise
