Arterra is an unexpected treasure in Carmel Valley. Actually for most of North County. You can have fine dining in a very boring hotel setting. Fresh local ingredients and very forward thinking menus. The desserts are amazing and innovative. The flavors that are created for the dinner menu and dessert menus always taste great together. Ingredients like shaft bleu cheese and roasted beet salads.
I've eaten here twice, and been quite pleased both times. The first time was for Sunday brunch, which was both delicious and affordable. The second time was for a double birthday dinner. Both times were enjoyable to the point of wanting more. The quality of the ingredients shows through, as does the correctness of it's preparation. Fruit was sweet, ripe, and ready to be eaten; meats were flavorful and juicy; side dishes were creative and well paired.
Of course the costs for this level a quality is higher than most places, but this is one place that deserves it, and for what you get, it actually feels quite fair.
