Just fifteen minutes from Thursday's wharf on the Horn Island Ferry ($15, departs hourly 6am–5pm), Horn Island is another small chunk of land surrounded by mangroves and coral, the site of an open-cut gold mine and the regional airport (with regular flights to and from Cairns). The main reason to take a trip across is to visit the pearling museum, run by an ex-diver and stocked with his memorabilia – including an old-fashioned bronze dive helmet.
