I LOVE this place! One of the 'hole in the wall' type places that never disappoints! Every time my family have a guest from out of town we try to take them their. My personal favorite is the Portobella Piccata so delicious! I am taking my boyfriend and father to dinner tomorrow night and I can't wait!
I did have one experience where they brought my mom the wrong entree, but they were great, they let her keep that dish and started on that while they were cooking her correct order, then when her correct meal came they boxed the wrong meal for her to take home and offered her a free dessert. So.. needless to say WONDERFUL SERVICE!
Some of their food is really good. Loved the calamari. And we liked sitting by the fireplace and the overall ambiance, however it can be VERY noisy, which is a turn off.
But one time we got the rotisserie chicken and it was raw near the bone. This is VERY bad, and they should really know better. I guess they were rushing birds out of the rotisserie due to demand.
The thing is, when we discovered this, they took it back and had to reorder, which took too long. The rest of us were done when my husband got his replacement meal. And though I think the waiter might have apologized, no manager came to our table or offered a free dessert for our trouble or anything. I thought they were a classier place than that.
Cafe Cruz offers white topped tables with butcher paper in a room with a decent amount of tan wood and brick. There is a brick rotisserie full of meat turning on spits, and the bar area, in the back, offers a comfortable wooden bar with stools. The outdoor patio area is brick, with flowers blooming in the summer. The wine list offers a great california selection, and certain items on the menu are very good. The daily lunch special sandwich is always wonderful. The last one I tried was a tuna salad with avocado and swiss on francese with a flavored mayonnaise. The pork chops are terrific, and so is the ahi appetizer. The fish of the day is also usually well executed. Cafe Cruz is located on 41st street across from taco bell, but despite the lack of ocean view, Cafe Cruz competes well with is ocean view counterparts due to the kitchen. The service over the years has ranged from okay to good, sometimes quite competent, but the food shines. The balsamic vinegar offered with dinner bread is very sweet, and the vinegar well complements the optional garlic offered along with the olive oil. The restaurant is a local hidden favorite that is fairly nondescript from the outside street view, but offers a relaxing and good meal. Also, the rotisserie meat, chicken or other, is great. If you are not set on an ocean view, Cafe Cruz is good. 3.0.
Cafe Cruz is one of my favorite spots in Santa Cruz county; it's casual, but also feels like a real treat. It's family-friendly (crayons on the tables! And adults like me love that too), but relaxed romantic lighting... Every time I go there I hear the sounds of lots of people having a great time. The food feels clean, healthy, and elegant.
i wrote a letter to complain about the poor service and mary, the manager, called me understanding and asking what could be done to win back my business? she offered to send a gift certificate and i never received one. so the experience CONTINUES to be poor!
