Old Rittenhouse Inn is Bayfield, Wisconsin's first Country Inn Bed & Breakfast and gourmet restaurant offering 20 guest rooms in 2 Victorian homes and a private cottage with fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and spectacular Lake Superior views. The Inn's Landmark restaurant offers breakfast, brunch, and dinner showcasing regional and seasonal cuisine. The Inn is located just blocks from Lake Superior and home of the Apostle Islands.
In our previous stays in Bayfield, we have chosen to be more economical in our lodging choices. Having seen the Old Rittenhouse Inn and wondering what it would be like to stay there, we gave it a try this year.
Our room at the La Chateau Boutin looked clean, but there were spiders on the ceiling. They obviously did not look up while they cleaned. Our view of the lake was diminished when we learned upon arriving at our room that the adjacent porch was not accessible. The logs provided for the fireplace would not burn, no matter how hard we tried. Who wants to work that hard to enjoy a quiet evening? In the morning, we skipped the additional $9 charge for the full breakfast and headed to our favorite orchard for freshly-made apple cider donuts intstead. No regrets for trying it once, but we won't go back.
Even though we were at the rittenhouse during the off season, the staff made our stay and our marriage ceremony a magical experience. Jerry, the innkeeper/officiant/chef, was fantastic! Very personable and an incredable chef! Andrea also prepared food for us and it was nothing short of 4-5 star! We stayed in room 10, it was clean, comfortable and had great views of the bay. Wendy, the events coordinator, made the wedding ceremony effortless for my husband and I. I would recommend this wonderful place with its wonderful staff to everyone!
The Rittenhouse is all hype. Not much bang for your buck and it was very disappointing. Dirty, actually. Next time we go to Bayfield (wonderful town) we will stay at Ole and Lena's Place...1/3 the price with three times the value and much more fun; or...Our Favorite Place.
Found the Old Rittenhouse Inn to be a charming place to stay. We spent 2 nights there, and had a very pleasurable time. Was impressed with the restored rooms, and found ours to be very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful, even to serving us coffee by the caraffe (free) on the porch. Our dining was a memorable experience, albet somewhat pricy, and a romantic evening in front of the fire in our room highlighted our stay.
I have read the reviews already posted, and can only wonder if perhaps they might need a lesson or two on lighting fires, and perhaps if they were looking for a less expensive place, with tv,
I do believe there is a Motel 6 somewhere nearby. We will visit the Old Rittenhouse Inn again. Pete---N.Y.
I've stayed here 3 times over the years and the experience has always been memorable. For starters, the town of Bayfield is fascinating with the Apostle Islands nearby, it is like a trip in a time machine, with scenery. The Rittenhouse itself is a beautifully restored antebellum mansion with magnificent restoration and upgrades. If there are two things that make this a most memorable experience, it is the warmth and hospitality of the owners and staff, and of course, there is the food. An amazing array of delicacies, many based on local, seasonal produce, provide an ever changing, but delightful dining experience. Dinner requires a couple of hours, but you will swear it was only minutes.
The Rittenhouse Inn isn't the easiest destination, though you should find it a beautiful drive. Regardless, it is worth ever minute spent geting there. You will never forget the experience.
Over priced, no TV's, no phones, no keys to lock room. Needs many updates. Not enough hot water to fill jacuzzi. Cramped dinning rooms, with bland food. Good view, easy to find but not what I was looking for.
The quality of the expereince really failed to meet our expectations. The staff generally seemed disinterested and aloof, like it was our priviledge to stay there. The dining experince was not up to the quality one would expect and the portions were small. The bedding looked like it needed to be changed and the wood was not dry enough to burn. When we politely brought this to the owners attention, he was very rude and insulting. We were planning a nice romantic weekend in Bayfield, but were so bothered by our expereince at the Rittenhouse we cut our weekend short. We paid a lot and got little.
