A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
A group of foodies went to dinner here with high expectations after Bauer gave A16 three stars (not sure where he ate, perhaps he was lost and wondered into some other restaurant on the street). The 30 minute wait beyond our reservation time was 15 minutes beyond reasonable, but we put it aside and went ahead with the dinner. Our mistake.
The volume is loud, making it difficult to carry on a conversation. The appetizers were decent, but not imaginative. Then the main course came, and it was horrible. Two of the people in my party ordered lamb rack. Which in itself indicates a limited menu. In most restaurants, it is difficult to choose just four different dishes for four people. Here, we had to repeat one. But we chose wrong. The lamb rack turned out to be bones with virtually no meat. Even worse, what little meat there was was tougher than shoe leather. Completely inedible, completely ridiculous. While I have never eaten at a McDonalds, I believe the food would have been much better. Fearing for our teeth, we complained the lamb was inedible; the waitress said it was a shame and walked away. No one even cared about the food they serve, which may be an even bigger sin than serving garbage in the first place.
I do not feel being insulted adds to one's experience of a restaurant, but I have to believe anyone eating at A16 enjoys being insulted and made mock of. This restaurant is not worthy of the San Francisco restaurant scene.
fantastically thin and crispy crust and the freshest ingredients make A16's pizza the best in the city of its kind. remainder of the restaurant's menu (including the wine menu) are worthy of note as well. biggest drawback of the restraurant remains it's insane popularity and near impossibility for people to get decent reservations.
A16 is a great Marina District new twist on the simple foods of Italy. The restaurant has the best selection of Italian wines I have expereinced. Its loud, you feel at home and they do not hurry you away from the table. You must have reservations. Sit near the back or near the front, avoid the tables in the middle by the open kitchen. Portions are not over done, they are just right and can be shared. Be sure to ask for the chicken meatballs. Trust me on this one, they are AWESOME. They are swamped every night with a sophisticated wine lover crowd.
A16 is unique in featuring regional Italian cuisine from the area around Naples. The burrata cheese is a must and also don't skip any meatball dish, whether they are made from chicken or a red meat. The wine list is spectacular and it is fun to order by the half glass to try a greater variety of esoteric Southern Italian wines
