Description

A16 is a restaurant and wine bar that brings to San Francisco the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania the Italian region that is home to Naples. The chic rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the region of Campania. The restaurant features Wood Oven Fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania, such as Pork Breast Braised with Olives, Herbs and Chestnuts. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

Fabulous service, wonderful, imaginative food. Make reservations early for a relaxing dining experience. Marina neighborhood.

We have been here many times and all our meals have been very good to excellent; ordering food by the season is best. For example, the pork breast in winter, the gnocchi with peas and broth in spring: those were standouts in the last year. We have always had excellent luck with that day's special, if there is one. The pizzas are great, but we usually have other dishes. Sometimes things are a bit too salty. We don't know a lot about wine other than that we like to try new things, and we always get excellent attention and advice in this area, no matter what our price point that visit. Except for once or twice, the service has been very attentive and just friendly enough, no matter how busy. We have always had reservations, but when we have had to change a time or number of guests ahead of time, the restaurant has been accommodating and helpful. It is incredibly noisy, though, so it is hard to bring guests and have a visit while eating.

I wish I could give A16 3.5 stars instead of just 3 because this low rating is a little undeserved. They have amazingly fresh and tasty burrata, and that alone is reason enough to visit A16. During the right seasons, they also have really deliciously grilled corn. Most of their other menu selections are not that unique or exciting, in my opinion. The pizza is nothing extraordinary, and some of their pasta specials are a bit suspect. I've had one where it looked like someone already ate it and threw it back up. To be fair, it really didn't taste anywhere as bad as it looked but I thought they could have tried a little harder on the presentation aspect of it. Also, their desserts are a tad on the boring side.

absolutely excellent pizza, great place for vegetarians as they have numerous selections and the wine selection is beyond belief, the people who wrote reviews below obviously had a terrible day at work or just have a terrible life in general because this place rocks!

Simple but great eats
By ,
A16 was recommended to us by a winery owner and we stopped by to check it out for dinner. The restaurant was extremely busy as they had just reopened after renovation. We ended up getting a bar table, but that was OK with us. The food was not fancy at all - simple but good. Yes the pizzas were great, and we even enjoyed the tripe. The service from the waiters were reasonably good. A good experience and wouldn't mind going again if we were back in San Francisco.

Best neopolitan pizza in SF
By ,
fantastically thin and crispy crust and the freshest ingredients make A16's pizza the best in the city of its kind. remainder of the restaurant's menu (including the wine menu) are worthy of note as well. biggest drawback of the restraurant remains it's insane popularity and near impossibility for people to get decent reservations.

How can anyone possibly return to this joint?
By ,
A group of foodies went to dinner here with high expectations after Bauer gave A16 three stars (not sure where he ate, perhaps he was lost and wondered into some other restaurant on the street). The 30 minute wait beyond our reservation time was 15 minutes beyond reasonable, but we put it aside and went ahead with the dinner. Our mistake. The volume is loud, making it difficult to carry on a conversation. The appetizers were decent, but not imaginative. Then the main course came, and it was horrible. Two of the people in my party ordered lamb rack. Which in itself indicates a limited menu. In most restaurants, it is difficult to choose just four different dishes for four people. Here, we had to repeat one. But we chose wrong. The lamb rack turned out to be bones with virtually no meat. Even worse, what little meat there was was tougher than shoe leather. Completely inedible, completely ridiculous. While I have never eaten at a McDonalds, I believe the food would have been much better. Fearing for our teeth, we complained the lamb was inedible; the waitress said it was a shame and walked away. No one even cared about the food they serve, which may be an even bigger sin than serving garbage in the first place. I do not feel being insulted adds to one's experience of a restaurant, but I have to believe anyone eating at A16 enjoys being insulted and made mock of. This restaurant is not worthy of the San Francisco restaurant scene.

Excellent!

Great food and a marvellous, chic interior. Perfect place to go if you're seeing a show at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater.
