Tonight, four of us tried the gastronomical fantasies of Kress. However, two of us are food critics from major markets, and, this review only includes those comments that were agreed upon by the entire table, and not just those of the professional critics at the table.
Apps - You can't go wrong with the carpaccio - after all it IS Waygu beef, or is it?
Soups - My Mama said never to anything if you can't say anything good.
Salads - See what my Mama told me above.
Entrees - The best bet, and only winner, of the evening was the Cowboy Rib Steak. Originally made famous by several steak houses in Kansas City, this cut of ribeye (bone-in) has become a staple at such places as Morton's, Ruth's Chris and the Palm, to name a few.
However, this cut of beef is about 1/2 the thickness that the previously named restaurants serve, albeit, at about a 25% discount in price from the other three. Additionally, what you first think is that perfect char when you're biting into this very tender steak is actually a mild teriyaki sauce that is 'lightly' brushed on the steak on one side after the turn.
While tender and perfectly cooked, this table expects a lot more from a steak and a restaurant. If you're going to compete with the 'Big Boys' then serve the same size steak that they do, cook it perfectly as you did (but WITHOUT the overly sweet teriyaki sause)and let that tender morsel of beef speak on its own!
Dessert - I was told that the area Kress is in previously was a 'destination point' for all the conventioneers that came to Orlando called Church Street Station, but closed after it had lost its charm when the 'undersirables' and their drugs moved into the area. The desserts at Kress for some reason made me think of those undersirables - you don't want to see them, smell them, and, much less taste them!
I'd talk about the service, but why bother, since they didn't care about any of our comments concerning the various dishes we tried - even though they did ask!
Overall experience left us with the only conclusion we could reach - one (1) fork out of a possible five (5).
I have been twice and it has been awesome both times. The food will melt in your mouth. I had the mixed grill and it was scrumptuous. They have a very nice wine selection as well. Very nice place to take a date. Be prepared to drop a C-note for two people but its definitely worth it. Excellent.
Our waiter was witty, attentive and helpful but except for the steak, the food was disappointing for this price. We were plated a split order of soup and the steak, which was nice. The cream of morel soup was thick as gravy and the tiny mushroom bits lacked the texture or taste of morels. The three cheese potato au gratin was layered with unmelted shreds of tasteless yellow cheese. Some asparagus spears should have been trimmed of tough, unchewable ends. I don't recommend this for great food.
The atmosphere is quiet, elegant and romantic. The food was superb, aside from my medium rare steak coming out rare. It was sent back for what seemed an extraodinarily long amount of time and came back still a little undercooked, but this time I didn't say anything! Skip the Key West Ceasar salad (bland) but try dessert. We were told they are made by the dessert lady and they are exquisite! The carrot cake and cheesecake were our favorites!
