Quince - San Francisco
Situated in San Francisco's historic Jackson Square, Quince is an intimate fine dining restaurant. Exceptionally locally-sourced and seasonal products from Quince's dedicated network of Northern California purveyors shape Chef Michael Tusk's Italian and French inspired, daily-changing menu.
Although the food wasn't quite to my expectations, the experience and service here are top notch.
When i made reservations here, the hostess asked if it was a special occasion. I mentioned that it was an anniversary dinner for myself and my girlfriend. Upon arrival, we found specially printed menus commemorating the date. a really nice touch.
concerning the food, while our appetizers where great--we had the sweetbreads and dungeness crab cakes--the pasta dishes were a little overcooked. For the mains, we ordered the salmon and duck. While the duck/pear pairing was very tasty, the salmon was a little overcooked for my liking. We finished up with tea, coffee and dessert which were all excellent. They actually steep the tea for you and remove the leaves before serving which is one of those extra steps that marked the wonderful service we had all night.
We will definitely make this a staple of our San Francisco trips. pasta dishes were to die for. wine selection could be larger and more reasonable. cheese selection was 15 cheeses! Almost perfect representation of agnolotti del plin. Exactly is it is in Italy.
Although the service was friendly and impeccable I have to say my overall experience at Quince was very disappointing. Our group had a five course prix fixe meal and not a single dish was memorable. We did have the recommended wine selections with each course and these were very good but they did not make up for the simply lack-luster cuisine. Bottom line: compared to any restaurant in the city it was a fair experience - compared to the same league of restaurants many purport Quince to be in, it was well below average. I was really looking forward to this meal too.......... :(
This is one of those places where the meal is great, the service is attentive and friendly, the ambiance comfortable, yet we went away with the feeling that the meal had not quite hit the spot. Every dish in itself was perfectly prepared but they were missing just that little extra that would have made this perfect.
This restaurant has far exceeded any other place I have ever been. Each dish was delicately prepared and served with care, and the service was beyond exceptional. Though this restaurant ranges in the higher end of prices, each dish was worth it. I would go here again for any special occasions, or to just have a quiet, relaxing and enjoyable dinner.
Wow. Michael Tusk is a true genius, full of ambition and talent to match. He is a devote of the organic school of cooking, and a master of it. Each night, Michael changes the menu to take advantage of what is fresh, and, well, to exercise his creative urges. In more than 15 visits, he has NEVER mis-fired. Each dish is wonderful, many of them transcendent. Even worse, it is almost impossible for four people to choose only four items from each course. There are always more choices one wishes one could taste. If only he could take the calories out of them:-)
With the amount of experimentation and creativity, he could be testing recipes for a cookbook. I hope he is.
The menu offers three courses. The first course is appetizers. Occasionally, Michael offers lardo. Which sounded questionable when I first heard it, but his preparation makes this dish transcendant. It melts in your mouth, and makes you want more. Of course, there is a sformato each night, with different flavors, and it is incredible.
The second course is pasta. From gnocci to the agnolotti dal plin, each pasta is house made, perfectly prepared, and full of flavor.
The third course is a more serious serving of meats and fishes. Dessert choices are a cheese cart or a more serious, creative sweet dessert. Don't miss them.
A stroll through historic Jackson Square will send you back to the 1850's era with its sturdy commercial buildings that
are sturdy enough to have survived two of San Francisco's major earthquakes. Tucked behind the shock of the Trans ...
