John Hardys Bar-B-Q - West Frontage Road
Welcome to John Hardy's Bar-B-Q, where you'll find service as fast as fast food, with friendly sit down comfort. All of our Bar-B-Q meats are smoked over cherry and apple wood for meat that is tender ad rich with flavor that will keep you comin' back for more! Our pork takes longer to cook and is slowly smoked overnight to perfection. All of John Hardy's meats are prepared fresh daily to give you the freshest smoked meats around! our meats are still cooked over cherry and apple wood fires and we still mix our special Hot, Medium, or Mild sauces the same way Mr. Hardy did over twenty years ago. Currently there are three Hardy's Bar-B-Q Restaurants in Rochester. Mr. Hardy was born February 4, 1921 in Birmingham, AL, he passed away on October 28, 1986 at Elgin, MN. We all miss his smile and friendly greeting here at Hardy's Bar-B-Q.
Im a huge BBQ fan and I am from the South (So I know what REAL BBQ taste like). I have had much better. I wasnt thrilled with the staff there and the place needs a good wipe down. We walked into dirty tables and a dirty floor. The place didnt smell like good ol bbq either. With alittle tweeking Im sure the BBQ could be much better. For the price of the platters I expected more food.
OMG, Absolutly horible, i should have just went to mcdonalds and got a mcrib it would have been better. We had the ribs, came with no sauce, they were tough and i think they just warmed them up in the microwave. also the service wasnt very good, waitress never came back to see how it was. I guess i should have known when we couldnt smell any barbq smokin when we walked in. On the plus side the bread was good, the fries were good, and we didnt get sick. Will never go back!
The sauce is the victory-yielding trump card for this quaint barbecue roadhouse. It's much better than Famous Dave's or Roscoe's sauces (which mimic what you can buy at Wal-Mart). Yeah, at lunch time it is REALLY crowded and busy, but that's because it's DANG GOOD! This place is the best barbecue joint in Rochester, and the best barbecue joint in the Midwest.
Unreal! The best BBQ I have ever tasted. It's not commercialized or flashy. The focus is on the food, and boy is it great. I live 2 hours away but sometimes you just got to have it! The first time I tried it was only about 2 years ago, after my friend finally dragged me in there after hyping it up. I am a skeptic and was pretty sure I would be disappointed. He had talked it up so much I thought nothing could live up to the raves. I was sold after the first bite. I would recommend it to anyone who likes real BBQ. The highlight of any trip to Rochester.
John Hardy's is the real deal. The meats and sides are very good and authentic. We especially like th beef and the ham, sliced thin and carved into bite size pieces. The place is very bare bones and down to earth, a welcome departure from the endless array of corporate desgned theme restaurants. We found theservice to be friendly and efficient. We could make a few menu suggestions. The garlic bread is fresh, hot and buttery but tends to be soggy. Corrnbread or garlic toast might be a step up. The serving size of the sides is way too small; beans are cheap, load 'em up! Lastly, John Hardy's serves no desserts. Too bad as a nice cream pie or dish of rice pudding is just the thing after a spicy, smoky meal. These limitations not with standing, we would keep going to John Hardy's time and again.
Vinegar-based, spicy BBQ sauces are often all heat and lean on the flavor, but John Hardy's signature spicy BBQ sauces (6 in all from Mild to Bad Boy) balance the heat with a good flavor. You get a lot of food for the money! The double-smoked ham had one of the boldest smoke flavors I've tasted. I prefer hickory BBQ myself, but John Hardy's is a good example of how to use apple and cherry woods the right way!
