When you serve 10,000 steaks a year, it is obvious you are doing something right. The home of the 'Silver Butterknife', this place with its low lights, smoked mirrors and pink linen tablecloths is your destination for delectable food. At Murray's, the ambiance is that of a 1950s supper club. Coupled with strolling violinists and efficient service, you know you are in for a first class evening. Start your culinary adventure with an appetizer of hickory-smoked shrimp, wrapped in bacon and served with cocktail sauce. The salads and baked potatos are huge, but dwarfed by the 28-ounce Silver Butterknife steak or the four-pound porterhouse. The smaller New York Strip steak or Broiled Walleye will surely satisfy those who are looking for a lighter meal. No one leaves without having a slice of Lemon-Angel Pie: a meringue crust with a tart custard-lemon filling, topped with whipped cream. The wine list is impeccable and the beer selection is first rate.
Murray's is a well known and revered authentic steakhouse. You may want to get reservations to ensure seating is available.
What I've eaten there: Golden butterknife steak, hickory smoked shrimp, crab cakes, walleye and wild rice spring roll.
Thoughts: Seriously excellent porterhouse steak (golden butterknife). Easily the best I've ever had. Not only are the cuts of meat obviously top tier, but the seasoning, cooking and carving are also expertly handled. It's what you would expect from one of the best steakhouses in the US. The appeitizers are also fantastic. Well matched flavors and creative choices make the dining experience memorable. The servers and their assistants are obviously well versed on how to handle each customer, and they meld right into the group you're dining with, completing the service.
The piano playing in the background along with a fancy ballroom-ish dining hall are throwbacks to a different era which serve to remind you that it isn't any ordinary restaurant you're eating in. The ambience can be a bit romantic for just a group of friends, but the ambience is what makes this steakhouse feel authentic, rather than suburban-generic like so many others.
Overall, expect an appeitizer, couple of drinks and a couple of entree's or a shared multi-person entree to set you back $100-$150.
Murrays is an old styles steakhouse that if your in your upper 40's and up, this might be a place to go. Alot of the famous eat here! The steak is good but takes a far 4th or even 5th behind Ruth Chris then Mannys, then Kincaids with Murrays and Mortons behind them. The food is too expensive for the price they offer.
