The Hangar on the Wharf
Hangar on the Wharf Pub & Grill is a local institution that was established in 1996 as Juneau's premier waterfront restaurant. Serving Alaska's freshest seafoods, hearty entrees and ice-cold Alaskan beers, the Hangar is a local gathering place with great food and an awesome atmosphere - not to mention the view. The Hangar on the Wharf is located in Juneau's historic Merchants Wharf Mall which used to be the home of Alaska Coastal Airlines in the 1940's. The seaplane hangar is a landmark in aviation history. Famous pilots such as Will Rogers used to land their aircraft in front of the Hangar during their great northern expeditions as the museum of enlarged historic photos at the restaurant show.
I love the Hangar!!! Great food, on top of great service. All the wait staff I've come across, were friendly and always smiling. You don't find that kind of service in a lot of places you go out. Also, looking out the window, gives you a great view of Douglas Island!! Great beer, food and the view.....what else do you need?
Their Blackened Halibut salad was really good. And for the out of towners looking to try a different beer, than your usual, get some Alaskan beer from their taps. Plenty to choose from.
In the Wharf mall located in downtown Juneau. The view is great, try to get a booth seat and you're overlooking the doc waters. In the summers you get to watch the float planes land right next to the restaurant. They have some really great salads and soups particularly their seafood chowder really good on those rainy days which is so common living in Juneau. For a dessert try the grasshopper pie, it's a local favorite. They also have bar with a big t.v. and you're sure to find some Alaskan Amber there.
this place is unique its its appeal to locals, legislators, and summer tourists alike. lots to look at, a gorgeous view, and steeped in history. i haven't sampled much of the menu, but can tell you firsthand that the burgers are tasty. lots of beers on tap, alaskan amber is always cool and fresh, but brews of lesser popularity can be stale.
When people visit Juneau, they are often impressed with the Hangar on thier first visit--a great view, the best selection of beer in Juneau, and a fairly wide variety of dishes on the menu. However, after tasting the quality of the food a couple times, everyone gets a litte jaded--not that it's bad, mind you--it all just tastes the same. That said, if you find a dish you like here, you can usually depend on it for consistency. Usually.
My own favorites are the blackened salmon or halibut ceasar salad, the buffalo burger, portabella fries, garlic fries, seafood chowder. Other great dishes move on and off the menu seasonally.
That said, the Hangar is still one of the best restaurants in Juneau in terms of service, amiance, food, view, menu selection, and seeing Juneauites. And if you drink every beer they've got, you get your name on a plaque on the wall. How can you go wrong?
