I've lived in Juneau for 2 years and am accustomed to higher quality of restaurants from down south aside from what Juneau has to offer. I've eaten here four times and it's always the same. This place! Look around ...it's filthy! The service is not that friendly or clean, and usually you have to wait a long time before your able to get a table, and only because the place is so small. They refuse to expand. The food is bland. Sorry Juneau, but apparently you folks don't realize what good food in a clean environment with even a little class has to offer.
I eat here at least once a week and have tried nearly everything on the menu. The portions are large, always enough for leftovers and a second meal (at least for me) so the value for the money is higher than the majority of Juneau restaurants. The food is consistently good, something that can rarely be said for most eateries. They're always willing to make something spicier for me (and less spicy for my less adventurous mother), and it's service with a smile and hearty greeting. The only thing that brings this place down is that the decor is downright ugly in this space they rent, but can't fault the view of Auke Bay Harbor! The decor and the small seating space do not lessen my stars; they matter very little to me compared to everything else.
The hours are so bad, I have to write them down because they confuse me. The food however is amazing and totally authentic, there is always a line outside, you can count on it so get there early. Expect to wait a while for your food, it even says so inside it's worth it though, just have patience. I recommend the Pad Thai and the Cashew Chicken.
The delicious dishes vary from a spicy curry to dishes of fresh spring rolls and traditional noodles. They have teas from thailand too! Once you walk in the restaurant you think that you're in the beautiful country, because they have scenic pictures of the statues and presidents, and the smell from the kitchen just makes you feel right at home. Even though the building is a little small, the food is great, and comes in at B-I-G portions for a reasonable price.
The food at Chan's Thai Kitchen is authenticly made so it is very good food. However the hours are so odd and extremley hard to remember, I can't tell you how many times I drove all the way out to Auke Bay just to find out there closed, even if I call before to find out alot of the time they don't pick up there phone. The food takes a very long time and there is usually a line since the restaurant is so space limited, speaking of the space I am also not impressed with the decor or lack there of. Overall Chan's Thai Kitchen is good for take out food if you can get through on the right day, but good luck. If you plan on dining in don't bring a fussy baby and prepare to wait!
