El Puerco Lloron
El Puerco Lloron, the Mexican mainstay near the Pike Place Market. This slightly scruffy taqueria has been cranking out vibrantly seasoned braised and grilled meats long before the current craze celebrating taco trucks shifted into high gear.the same menu is served all day, those prices are a steal for dinner. (And there's a peek-a-boo water view, too.) This hot spot is hardly a secret; the wall is plastered with weathered reviews. But the proof of its ongoing excellence is in the crowds its affordable, well-prepared food continues to draw.
You have to wait on your feet for at least 15 minutes before the one person who is cooking gets to you to take you order. Them you have to continue standing there while she prepares it. Even though she is extremely fast, that is too long to wait standing up. They need another cook, someone to be the cashier besides the cook, AND they need waitstaff.
Now on to the food: So darn good! I had the Cheese Rellano. I don't care for the scrambled egg that is customary in the preparation of this dish, but it was still excellent. They give you warm, freshly made corn tortillas with your meal, and their rice is the most flavorful Spanish variety I've ever had--and their salsa is fabulous! One of the top Mexican places I've eaten at. And I believe they've won the Best Restaurant award (or whatever) most years.
If you want a classic example of Seattle yuppie snobbery, this is the place to find it, especially during the tourist season when it gets a little busy around Pike Place Market and the Seattle waterfront. This location is on the Pike Street Hill Climb. It has very authenic Mexican food and a rustic setting with folding leg card tables and steel folding chairs. Try and know what you want before you even get in line or expect to be snapped at about hurrying up. It made me lose my appetite for the place, but you may find the food worth it. There is a better location in Bellevue that split off from it years ago called La Cocina del Puerco where the service is a lot friendlier but the food is the same.
