The Riverhouse Hotel & Convention Center
The Purcell family came to Bend in 1962 and worked in the construction industry. The Riverhouse partnership was formed in 1973 and the motel opened in February of 1974 with 93 motel rooms. The facility was located on an old homestead where a meat processing plant had been located and ran for many years. Contractors by trade, the Purcell family built the motel, set up the books and picked out all the original furnishings and fixtures right down to the carpet, themselves. The Riverhouse Convention Center houses the largest single meeting room east of the Cascades. Over 1,000 people can be accommodated for a sit down meal and over 1,700 people can be served in a reception. The Convention Center was built with state-of-the-art audio and visual technologies. It was also built in an environmentally friendly manner utilizing trees from the site for the building and harvested native grasses and boulders from the site for landscaping. High efficiency computerized heating and cooling also adds to the Convention Center's environmental friendliness.
My husband and I were in need of a weekend getaway and Bend, Oregon was just the place. We live in the Portland area and though our 3 hour plus drive was a bit long it was worth it and we would easily do it again. This was our first visit to Bend and the Riverhouse Resort and we loved them both. The area was beautiful especially if you like rivers, waterfalls, hiking, fishing skiing, golfing or just relaxing then Bend is for you anytime of the year. We were impressed by the quaint older part of town mixed with the newer trendy eating and shopping spots like the Mill all within a short walking distance.
When we arrived we were a bit surprised to find the hotel under renovation; however it was very unobtrusive and didn’t hinder our weekend at all. We found the staff at The Riverhouse Resort very helpful and efficient. Whatever requests we made were promptly fulfilled. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with little touches to make you feel at home, even a fireplace. Contrary to some reviews we found the rooms to be well lit and to our liking. The room had a microwave and refrigerator which would be handy for a lengthier stay and an exceptionally large closet which is unusual for a hotel. Our room had a beautiful view with a balcony overlooking the Deschutes River where we had our morning coffee.
The Complimentary Continental Breakfast was quick and easy for us to take advantage of with lots of choices and delicious pastries. My husband and I found our stay most enjoyable and very relaxing. The only regret we had was that we couldn’t stay longer! Kudos to the staff at the Riverhouse Resort, we look forward to returning.
I typically don’t write reviews but my encounter with the staff at the Riverhouse was so refreshing that I felt the need to tell my story. I travel frequently for business and let’s just say that most times the customer service or lack there of can leave you wondering where did it go? I was attending a meeting at the Riverhouse Resort and had flown in from Arizona. My plane was delayed which from past experience I thought this was surely going to cause a problem when checking in, however I was surprised when the front desk crew greeted me with smiles and was able to put me in the room I had requested, with no hassle. The rooms were large and had everything I needed including a great well lit desk and a view of the Deschutes River outside my balcony. By the time I got settled I was starving and thought surely room service would be closed but to my surprise the staff was very friendly, took my order and it arrived in less than 30 minutes still hot!
The next morning after enjoying a complimentary Continental Breakfast I was finalizing my presentation and realized my handouts were incorrect and I needed to prepare new ones immediately. The business center was located right in the convention center lobby which made this a quick fix but I needed my handouts copied, collated and stapled and I was running out of time. The staff noticed my panic and once again offered to help me out by suggesting they could handle it for me. My presentation was riding on these handouts and getting them on time was crucial. The staff had everything back to me just as I had requested, collated, stapled and ready to hand out. It is refreshing to know that this type of service is still out there and obviously thriving at the Riverhouse Resort and Convention Center. Thanks to the staff my presentation was seamless and nobody was the wiser to my earlier predicament.
I just returned from an amazing conference at the Riverhouse Resort and Convention Center and wanted to make other meeting planners aware of their truly incredible, competent staff, not to mention the breathtaking location this resort is surrounded by. My clients needed to host a meeting in Bend, Oregon and I had previously learned of this resort from a colleague. From the arrival of the meeting attendees to my late departure, the staff never missed a beat. All attendees were pleased with the room accommodations including the microwaves and refrigerators that were in each room and Wireless Internet Access that actually worked. The large work desks and comfortable seating allowed for easy after hours email catch up with the office. Most attendees had river views and I was lucky enough to have a fireplace in my room as well. There is nothing like unwinding at the end of a packed conference day on your patio overlooking the Deschutes River with a glass of wine and listening to the water flowing beneath you. I must bring my husband back for a romantic getaway and ask for the Spa Suite I heard so much about that has a full size spa tub – wouldn’t that be incredible!
The Convention Center has all the latest options and designed beautifully with an entry fireplace and waterfall with artwork from local artists displayed throughout. This is all newly complete space and was really impressive. Our conference was a bit cumbersome with many breakouts and exhibits but the space handled us well and was very flexible and flowed perfectly throughout. The Audiovisual staff was topnotch unlike any I have encountered in the past. I never had to worry about a thing, every presentation ran flawlessly.
The Food at the Riverhouse Resort is top notch. The prime rib at Crossings Steakhouse melted in your mouth and the outside dining was charming. Our group catered breakfasts and lunches at the Convention Center were high quality and the staff just seemed to anticipate every need.
Even though the attendees were at the Riverhouse Resort and Convention Center to “work” they did manage to get some “playing” time in at the Rivers Edge Golf Course which sits just behind the resort. Other’s opted to go shopping, which is within walking distance of the resort.
In closing, the feedback I have received from most attendees is overwhelmingly an A+ for the overall conference. Kudos to the staff at the Riverhouse Resort and Convention Center! Great Job and thank you for making my job so easy and for making me look so good! I love it! If you need to have a meeting in Bend, Oregon, this is the place.
NEVER AGAIN!!! I WILL NEVER STAY AT THIS HOTEL AGAIN, OR RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE! I TRAVEL FOR THE ARMY AND STAY AT HOTELS ALL OVER THE U.S. . THIS HOTEL WAS NOT ONE OF THE BETTER ONES. THE ROOM WAS DIRTY, THE TOILET WAS BROKE, THE ALARM CLOCK WAS BROKE AS WAS THE MICROWAVE. WHEN I COMPLAINED TO THE FRONT DESK, THE GUY DIDN`T CARE. THE BREAKFAST WAS A JOKE. IT WAS A BUNCH OF TABLES AND CHAIRS IN A SPARE ROOM WITH SOME COLD CERIAL AND FRIUT. FOR THE MONEY THEY FELL WAY SHORT OF HOTELS AT HALF THE PRICE. I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN NOR WILL I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE!
We loved the Riverhouse. My husband and I stayed there for our anniversary one year and they gave us a complimentary bottle of champagna and treated us so nicely! The rooms are clean and our view was very nice. We will definitely be going back!
My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon. We found the staff to be professional, courtieous and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean. The views from the balconies are absolutely breathtaking. The food at the restaurant was excellent. We highly recommend the Riverhouse Resort to anyone and everyone. We can't wait to go back and spend our anniversary there.
We have stayed at the Riverhouse before, but will never stay there again. We made a reservation for July 30 on the website. The reservations website has issues, and this was acknowledged by the reservations manager, Jody. The email confirmation I received did not have any of the stay details, only the reservation number and a link to the broken reservations website. I phoned a few days before arrival to confirm our reservation, and they informed me that they expected me the week before, and that they had already charged my card $185! They didn't even call me to tell me that they were charging me. I spoke with the manager, JR, and despite explaining that we wouldn't return if he refused to refund our money, he proceeded to refuse our request! There are plenty of hotels in Bend - no need to waste your time here. The location is lousy, on a noisy highway, far from the nice downtown area. You can do better!
My wife and I are frequent travelers. I'm handicapped so we need wheelchair access facilities. Except for the lack of a handheld shower the hotel met the disabilities act better than most. Our room was lovely, large and conviently located. We had two step access to our car. Tha furnishings and decor was nicer than most hotels. The wooded setting was attractive and peaceful. We were never aware of noise from the highway or mall across the way. The restaurant alongside the river's edge was a beautiful setting; the service was impeccable; the food was 4-star. The morning crepes were on a par with Brennan's of New Orleans.
We had read the few negative internet comments beforehand and after 3 days on a busy holiday weekend, we said sour grapes. If ever we're near Bend again, it's the only hotel we would stay at.
This was not a positive experience for my family. It was falsely represented on the website as being within walking distance of downtown Bend and 30 boutiques and shops. This was not the case. I don't consider an adjacent noisy parking lot with a suburban mall complete with a Sears auto parts store a boutique experience. It was old and very overpriced. The website makes it look and sound much better than it is. I wish we had stayed at Sunriver.
