I'm in the military and I just can't wait to get time off to sit down at the bar for shooters! Then it's anyone one of the pan roasts, stews, or chef's specials. I can't stand seafood that's breaded or fried and at Sharks that's like profanity to their ears. I love the atmosphere and if you want fast food go to McDonalds but if you want a quality and tasty meal go to Sharks!
By the way, the hostess, waitress, bartender, and cashier is the best entertainment. She has such a friendly and smiling face with a touch of robust energy that makes the experience a delight.
I've been to Shark's three times. Unfortunatly it's about two hours away, but I'm planning a trip to Newport for the sole purpose of eating there. My wife discovered it a few years ago and excitedly told me how great the cioppino was. We went back on a romantic weekend and I fell in love with it! The interior is tiny, crowded, rustic, and delightful. It's abuzz with happy customers and the friendly hostess yelling across the restaurant to direct weary travelers to available tables. Our favorite seat is the one right next to the cooking pots. It's fun to watch them add all the fish and ingredients and then pour the huge servings into barely adequate dishes. It is by far my favorite cioppino (and I LOVE cioppino!), but they have other delicious pasta and seafood dishes, too, like bouillabaisse and fettucini with clams. The prices are surprisingly modest for the extreme pleasure received. The impression I get, and this may be way off, but it's how it feels when I go there, is that the crusty fisherman and his flambouyant wife have invited you to dinner in their rustic home and are treating you to their favorite specialty. They are pleased that you want to watch them cook and are pleased to hear that you like your dinner. The service is happy, playful, and a bit harried (like a fisherman's wife might be). I consider it a jewel in Newport's crown. When I think of Newport, I think of the aquarium, the classic hotels on the beachfront, the beautiful bridge over the bay, and Shark's.
