Hearty Chicago-style sandwiches laden with the finest Italian beef has made Michael's, a Portland staple for close to three decades now. Choose from a mouthwatering menu of hot and cold sandwiches and hot dogs with fillings ranging from their signature Italian beef to chicken, pork and even meatballs. The Burger Italiano and Pizza style offer some wacky takes on the sandwiches. The breakfast menu available from 7a is quite popular. Apart from this, you can also enjoy pasta with a good choice of meats and accompaniments. The dinner salad proves to be a good side to the food. Kids will be delighted with the separate options available. The interiors, with chequered flooring, stools and a sandwich counter are pretty standard and don't warrant a second glance. The place sees a good crowd at most times and the atmosphere inside is suitably casual.
Michael's has that rarest of qualities: consistency. The food is excellent, but more importantly, it is always the same. The sandwich I get today is the same as the sandwich i got the first time I walked through the door. Few places can make this claim.
It is clean, the staff is competent, and the owner is a constant presence. Michael's is family friendly. The shoestring fries are always done to perfection and the hot peppers are scrumptious--especially if you are lucky enough to get garlic in them!
It isn't a type of food I would eat daily, but I know where to go when I need serious fuel and want to make sure my money is well spent.

The fries were excellent. You can also order it in bulk (for holiday parties, potluck) so you can introduce this great Chicago sandwich to Portlanders...
