Old Wives' Tales Restaurant

Description

The intriguing name might prod you to have a look at the restaurant, but once inside, the aroma of freshly prepared food takes over, and has such a hold that you'll find it difficult to leave without eating. Old Wives' Tales has been a Portland fixture for more than three decades now, and delights with a menu of honest and hearty house-made food. The menu follows no specific cooking styles and is a blend of influences from Europe, Asia, America and pretty much every region that's known for it's food. Start off your meal with one of the fresh salads or soups from the soup bar. The entree selection is diverse and offers such delights as the East Indian Burrito and Teriyaki Salmon. Apart from this, there's a huge choice in freshly prepared sandwiches with a variety of meats. The children's menu is high on health and has very little greasy stuff; a delight for mothers. Dietary deficiencies are exceptionally well-catered to with most of the menu suitable for a gluten-free palate. Apart from this, there's lots of vegan and vegetarian choices. The atmosphere inside is cozy and well-suited to individual diners and families alike. Children get their own playroom so parents can eat in peace. One of the best family restaurants in the city.

Amazing Soup & Salad Bar, accompanied by a superb menu of eclectic foods. A blend of many cuisines pleases the palate. The real kicker is the kids play space, allowing adults to eat in peace.

Been here a couple of times. The first was for dinner - the Hungarian mushroom soup is awesome. The Greek melt was ok - not great. Breakfast on the other hand was awesome - we were a larger group and got to try out various items on the menu and all were good. The waitress though was a little rude but maybe she was just having a bad day as the rest of the staff were courteous.

I had my first encounter with this restaurant this past weekend. Really good food, great service! I went back the next morning for breakfast and the oven pancake is absolutely wonderful. Will definitely go there again and soon.

God I miss their soup...

The only thing I miss about living in Portland is my frequent trips here for some of the BEST soup I have ever tasted. The Hungarian mushroom soup is out of this world, and with your soup you get to fill up at the bread bar. Several different kinds of rolls, crackers, even rice crackers, all compliment the soups flavor, while also helping you fill your tummy for a reasonable price. The staff is wonderful, they had me feeling like family from the very first visit. They also have some tasty sandwhiches, the rosemary chicken was always a favorite of mine. Another fine feature was the separate kids play area. I think this is something more restaurants should employ. This serves to give the weary parents a much needed break while they enjoy some adult time, wound up kids a chance to play and relax, and those of us without kids a pleasant eating experience without the usual whining from that kid right behind you who wont stop kicking the back of the booth. Ahhh, for a family eating experience we all can enjoy, this restaurant has the highest marks from me, and forever a place in my heart. That's it I am buying a train ticket to Portland, it has been far too long since I had me some of that delicious soup.

Perfect for dining with Toddlers
By ,
When you want good, healthy food but you hate the hassle of the little ones always fussing at their seat, head to Old Wives Tales. With a separate playroom, complete with boats and lofts, adults will be able to enjoy more of their meal. Kids have more fun and also like the food. They can handle a larger group in a separate room next to the playroom so its perfect for multi-family get togethers.
