Noble Rot opened in May 2002. It has gained local and national attention including the NY Times, the Wine Spectator & Gourmet. The Willamette Week named Noble Rot "Restaurant of the Year" in 2003 & Sunset Magazine named it "2009 Wine Bar of the Year". The best way to plunge into the Rot is through the wine flights that are offered each day. They also display a large bottle selection and all the wines are available to go. Noble Rot's highly regarded, locally sourced, seasonal food menu is made up of small plates with intense flavors. Noble Rot is perched atop the fourth floor in an award winning, environmentally sound, Leed-platinum certified building (the greenest!) which includes a fantastic west facing city view. With its outdoor patio seating, it is one of the best places in the city to watch the sunset.
Maybe it's just me but I found this place to be dark, crowded, overpriced, a bit pretentious, and slow on service. Of course the wine list is impressive..you would expect it to be; but waiting outside for 40 minutes to get in, then getting the bum's rush to place our order was hardly worth the wait. Parking is a nightmare. Be prepared to walk a few blocks to get to the front door. For my money, I'd rather go to Vino Paradiso, which is never this crowded, but boasts a fine wine selection and ever-changing menu that keeps me interested.
I've been to the Noble Rot three times and have enjoyed each of my experiences immensely.
- You are surrounded by wine (by the glass and the bottle)
- Staff was very knowledgeable
- The menu is limited to a few seasonal and rotating dishes. Portions are small but nicely priced and serve to complement their many wines.
- Parking can be difficult since it is in the Laurelhurst area
- They don't accept reservations so prepare to wait if it is a peak night
